Bitcoin Drops Below $66K as Oil Prices Surge Amid U.S.-Iran Tensions

  • Bitcoin price briefly dropped below $66K as rising oil prices and U.S.-Iran tensions spurred risk-off sentiment among investors.
  • The asset quickly rebounded above $68K, finding support near the $65,000 level.

Bitcoin briefly fell to $65,727 on Monday, March 9, as investors reacted to rising oil prices and escalating geopolitical tensions. The cryptocurrency extended its five-day decline, losing almost 11% during this period and about 5% over the past month.

Rising Oil Prices Trigger Risk-Off Sentiment

Tensions in the Middle East, particularly between the U.S. and Iran, disrupted oil flow at the Strait of Hormuz, a major global trade chokepoint. Recent military actions, including Israeli strikes on fuel depots and Iran’s retaliatory attacks on vessels and bases, pushed oil prices above $100 per barrel for the first time in nearly four years.

This surge in energy costs has renewed investor concerns over inflation in the U.S., potentially delaying interest rate cuts and encouraging a tighter Federal Reserve policy. Such conditions often weigh on high-risk assets like Bitcoin, contributing to its recent downward movement.

Bitcoin Moves in Line with Traditional Markets

Bitcoin’s performance has mirrored equities, with major U.S. indices also experiencing losses. Dow Jones futures fell over 1,000 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 dropped 136 and 440 points, respectively. The correlation highlights how Bitcoin often reacts alongside traditional markets during periods of macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty.

Support Holds Amid Recovery

Despite the decline, Bitcoin found strong support around the $65,000 mark, a level that has historically attracted buying interest. By late U.S. trading hours, the cryptocurrency rebounded above $68,000, suggesting that investors have absorbed the immediate market shock.

Looking ahead, Bitcoin’s trajectory will depend on the evolution of geopolitical tensions, oil market stability, and potential policy shifts from the Federal Reserve. The asset’s quick recovery demonstrates resilience despite ongoing volatility.
