BlackRock Files for Bitcoin ETF With 10% Loss Protection

  • BlackRock files for PBIT, a Bitcoin ETF designed to cushion losses.
  • The fund limits potential gains and does not guarantee protection.

BlackRock has filed for a new Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) designed to reduce losses during market downturns while limiting potential gains during price rallies. The proposed iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, which would trade under the ticker PBIT, offers a different way for investors to gain Bitcoin exposure without directly holding the cryptocurrency.

The asset manager submitted its registration statement to the SEC on October 19. The fund would use options contracts and fixed-income investments to manage market risks rather than hold Bitcoin directly.

How BlackRock’s New Bitcoin ETF Would Work

Unlike traditional spot Bitcoin ETFs, PBIT would use options tied to the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) or similar Bitcoin-linked assets. This approach would allow the fund to target potential gains while seeking to cushion losses during market declines.

The proposed strategy would use three overlapping groups of options contracts, known as tranches. Each tranche would begin in a different month and use purchased and sold call options to manage its exposure to Bitcoin’s price movements.

The purchased call options would generally have strike prices set around 10% below the reference asset’s starting value. This structure would initially target a loss threshold of approximately 10% for each tranche before expenses.

However, the protection would not guarantee that investors could lose no more than 10% of their money. Market movements, changes in the protection threshold, and the timing of an investor’s purchase could all affect actual returns.

Bitcoin Gains Would Be Limited Under the Strategy

BlackRock’s proposed Bitcoin ETF would trade some potential upside for downside protection. The fund would sell call options to generate payments that help cover the cost of its protective strategy.

Selling these options would limit gains above specified price levels if Bitcoin-linked assets rise sharply. As a result, PBIT could deliver lower returns than a traditional spot Bitcoin ETF during a strong rally.

The fund would also invest in cash, money market funds, short-term government obligations, and investment-grade fixed-income securities. Interest income from these holdings could help offset options costs and some investment losses.

Despite these measures, shareholders could still lose part or all of their investment. Options liquidity, interest rate changes, counterparty risks, and trading expenses could also affect performance.

How PBIT Differs From BlackRock’s Existing Bitcoin ETFs

BlackRock already offers Bitcoin investment products, including the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), which aims to reflect Bitcoin’s price performance without the proposed downside protection strategy.

IBIT held approximately $65.34 billion in net assets as of October 16, according to BlackRock’s published figures.

The company also launched the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA) on June 16. That fund uses a covered-call strategy to generate income while limiting some potential gains.

PBIT would serve a different purpose. While BITA focuses on income generation, the proposed PBIT fund would prioritize a defined options-based approach to reducing downside exposure.

The new fund would normally invest at least 80% of its net assets, plus any investment borrowings, in Bitcoin exposure or its protection strategy. BlackRock Fund Advisors would manage the ETF.

When Could BlackRock’s PBIT ETF Launch?

BlackRock’s filing remains subject to the regulatory process. The registration statement proposes becoming effective 75 days after October 19, although the filing does not mean the fund is already available to investors.

The preliminary prospectus states that shares cannot be sold before the registration becomes effective. The management fee has also not yet been specified, leaving investors without a complete picture of the fund’s costs.

BlackRock may adjust its options positions as market conditions change, meaning the level of protection and investment results could vary over time.

If approved and launched, PBIT would offer investors another way to approach Bitcoin exposure, particularly those concerned about sharp market declines. However, its limited upside and potential costs mean it would not necessarily outperform a conventional Bitcoin ETF.

The proposed fund highlights a growing effort to develop cryptocurrency investment products that address investor concerns about volatility. Whether PBIT attracts demand will depend on its final terms, costs, and ability to provide meaningful protection during market downturns.
