- BlackRock has launched its iShares Bitcoin ETP for UK retail investors, offering secure, regulated exposure to Bitcoin through Coinbase custody.
- The move follows the success of its U.S. Bitcoin ETF and reflects growing institutional acceptance of crypto despite volatile market conditions.
BlackRock has officially launched its iShares Bitcoin ETP for UK retail investors, giving them direct exposure to Bitcoin through a regulated and institutional-grade investment platform. The move comes after the firm’s U.S. Bitcoin ETF became its most profitable fund in just 21 months, signaling growing mainstream adoption of digital assets.
UK Investors Gain Secure Access to Bitcoin
BlackRock now lists the iShares Bitcoin ETP on the London Stock Exchange, physically backing it with Bitcoin held through Coinbase custody. The platform moves Bitcoin from trading wallets into segregated cold storage daily, giving investors stronger security and regulatory oversight. Jane Sloan, BlackRock’s EMEA head of global product, highlighted that the ETP provides UK investors a “securer gateway to digital assets through traditional investment platforms,” as the UK crypto investor base is expected to reach four million within the next year.
BlackRock’s Crypto Pivot and Market Success
The UK launch mirrors the success of BlackRock’s U.S. Bitcoin ETF, which now manages over $87.5 billion in assets and generates roughly $244.5 million annually. Initially criticized for being associated with illicit activity, CEO Larry Fink has shifted his stance, now likening Bitcoin’s role in investment portfolios to that of gold. “The markets teach you, you always have to relook at your assumptions,” Fink told CBS, highlighting crypto as a viable alternative asset.
Challenges Amid Volatile Markets
Despite the excitement, market conditions remain unstable. Digital asset investment products experienced $513 million in outflows last week due to a Binance liquidity event that caused nearly $20 billion in liquidations. Regulatory fragmentation also raises concerns, with the Financial Stability Board warning that inconsistent global rules could threaten financial stability.
A Step Toward Broader Crypto Offerings
Industry experts see BlackRock’s UK expansion as a gateway to more diverse crypto products. Fabian Dori, CIO at Sygnum, expects further offerings like diversified crypto baskets and tokenized securities, though the Financial Conduct Authority is likely to monitor retail outcomes carefully before expanding participation.
BlackRock’s UK iShares Bitcoin ETP represents a milestone in bringing institutional-grade crypto exposure to retail investors. By combining security, regulatory compliance, and accessibility, it could set a new standard for mainstream crypto investment in Britain.
