- BlackRock is launching the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA) to generate income from Bitcoin using covered call options.
- It targets about 15% annual yield while still capturing most of Bitcoin’s upside.
BlackRock is preparing to launch a new Bitcoin-focused exchange-traded fund designed to turn crypto volatility into steady income. The product, called the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA), aims to give investors exposure to Bitcoin while generating regular returns from options trading.
The fund is set to debut next Tuesday and has already attracted strong attention from institutional markets. It reflects a growing demand for crypto products that offer income rather than only price exposure.
A New Approach to Bitcoin Investing
The new ETF will be managed by BlackRock through its iShares platform. It introduces a hybrid strategy that blends Bitcoin exposure with income generation.
The fund holds positions in the iShares Bitcoin Trust IBIT, which tracks the price of Bitcoin directly. On top of that, it sells call options on those holdings.
This strategy is known as covered call writing. It allows the fund to collect option premiums as a source of income.
How BITA Generates Income
The structure of the BITA ETF is built around Bitcoin’s volatility. Since Bitcoin often experiences large price swings, option premiums tend to be higher than in traditional markets.
BITA earns income by selling call options on its Bitcoin-linked holdings. Investors pay a premium for these options. If Bitcoin stays below the agreed price level, the fund keeps the premium. If Bitcoin rises above that level, the upside is capped but not eliminated.
This creates a balance between income generation and price participation.
Target Yield and Market Expectations
According to estimates from Tagus Capital, the ETF may target an annual yield of around 15%. Some projections suggest a range of 15% to 25%, depending on market conditions.
The strategy is designed to capture about 70% of Bitcoin’s upside while still delivering consistent income. This makes the fund appealing to institutional investors who prefer predictable cash flow over full exposure to price swings.
Impact on Bitcoin Volatility
Bitcoin’s structure makes it attractive for options-based strategies. Even in calm markets, it tends to show higher volatility than traditional assets.
However, analysts warn that large-scale covered call strategies could affect the broader market. Increased selling of call options may reduce implied volatility over time. This trend has already been visible since 2022, and BITA could accelerate it further if adoption grows.
Market Conditions Ahead of Launch
The launch comes during a mixed period for Bitcoin. The asset recently rebounded from around $59,000 to above $66,000.
Despite this recovery, institutional flows remain uneven. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have recorded net outflows in recent sessions, showing weaker demand from large investors. The new ETF arrives at a time when investors are reassessing how they gain exposure to Bitcoin, especially through income-focused products.
A Shift Toward Income-Driven Crypto Products
BITA signals a broader shift in crypto investing. Instead of only chasing price appreciation, investors are increasingly seeking yield-based strategies. By combining Bitcoin exposure with options income, BlackRock is positioning the product as a bridge between traditional finance and digital assets.
If demand grows, similar structured products could become more common across the crypto ETF market.
