While fiat-backed models dominate, they raise trust issues—users must believe issuers truly hold sufficient reserves. Crypto-collateralized and algorithmic stablecoins promise decentralization but face operational fragility.

For example, USDK, launched in 2019 by OKLink and Prime Trust, guarantees 1:1 USD backing, with funds held in escrow and verified monthly by Armanino. Smart contract audits from Certik and Slowmist further increase security assurances.

As institutional adoption grows, transparency and verifiable reserves are likely to become key differentiators in the crowded stablecoin market.

Stablecoins and Financial Inclusion

Beyond trading, stablecoins offer a lifeline in economies plagued by hyperinflation or limited banking access. In Venezuela and Angola, citizens have turned to stablecoins as more reliable stores of value compared to collapsing national currencies.
