Coinbase Big Bet on Tokenized Stocks

Coinbase is set to deepen its push into tokenized assets with plans to roll out futures tied to stocks, crypto, and ETFs. This move aligns with CEO Brian Armstrong’s broader ambition of building an “everything exchange.”

“We’re launching the first U.S. futures that give exposure to the top U.S. tech stocks and crypto at the same time,” Armstrong stated.

The flagship product will be the Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures, combining equities like Apple, Nvidia, and Tesla with exposure to Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) ETFs, alongside Coinbase’s own COIN stock. This marks the first U.S. crypto equity index—a milestone in blending traditional finance with blockchain-powered innovation.

Solana Leads, Ethereum Rises

While Coinbase’s entry is significant, Solana currently dominates tokenized stocks with nearly 59,000 on-chain holders. Platforms like xStocks and Remora Markets are fueling adoption, with xStocks already surpassing $630 million in trading volume within weeks of launching.

Still, Ethereum is not far behind. With the expansion of xStocks to Ethereum, coupled with growing activity on Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum and Base, ETH is cementing itself as a settlement layer for tokenized assets.

This expansion could provide a substantial boost for Ethereum, especially with BlackRock’s ETH ETF now integrated into Coinbase’s new index.

Tokenization Beyond Stocks

Tokenized equities are only one piece of the puzzle. Stablecoins have already tokenized cash, while debt, commodities, and real estate are rapidly moving on-chain. The SEC’s Project Crypto hints at even wider adoption across traditional markets.

For Ethereum and Solana, this represents a battle for dominance in the settlement of real-world assets (RWA). Institutional interest, corporate treasuries, and ETF integrations signal that both networks could capture explosive growth in the coming years.

Traditional Finance Pushes Back

Not everyone is on board. The World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) has urged U.S. lawmakers to regulate tokenized stocks, branding them “mimics” that lack the legal protections of traditional equities.

This pushback highlights the regulatory uncertainty surrounding tokenized assets, but also underscores just how disruptive the sector could become.

Coinbase’s expansion into tokenized stocks may accelerate Ethereum’s role in powering real-world asset adoption, even as Solana currently holds the lead. With institutional players and DeFi innovators driving billions in volume, the tokenization of assets is no longer just a trend—it’s the next frontier of finance.
