- Ethereum briefly fell below $2,700 as The DAO Security Fund launched with over $200 million to boost network security.
- The fund repurposes unclaimed 2016 DAO hack funds to support wallet, bridge, and core protocol protections.
Ethereum (ETH) has dropped below the $2,700 support level, coinciding with the launch of The DAO Security Fund, a $200 million initiative aimed at improving Ethereum’s security nearly a decade after the infamous 2016 hack.
The DAO Security Fund Revives Old Funds for Ethereum Security
The DAO, originally a crowdfunded venture capital project in 2016, suffered a major hack that ultimately led to Ethereum’s hard fork, splitting the chain into Ethereum and Ethereum Classic. Nearly ten years later, “edge case” funds from that era, now valued at over $200 million, are being repurposed to enhance Ethereum’s security.
Developer Griff Green, a creator of the platform, explained that these funds will target security improvements, including wallet user experience, incident response, L2 and bridge security, and core protocol protection.
The initiative will operate under the Ethereum Foundation’s “Trillion Dollar Security” program, with funding distributed through open mechanisms like quadratic funding, retroactive funding, and RFP rank-choice voting. Curators, including Vitalik Buterin, Taylor Monahan of MetaMask, and Pol Lanski of Dappnode, will manage The DAO Security Fund.
Ethereum Price Briefly Tests Key Support Levels
ETH currently trades at around $2,730 but briefly fell below $2,700, following a rejection at the $3,060 resistance level reinforced by the 20-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA). A continued failure to hold $2,700 could push the price down toward $2,625, a key support from last November, with further downside near $2,380.
Market indicators show bearish signals, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) trending below neutral and the Stochastic Oscillator in oversold territory. However, oversold conditions could also trigger a short-term price reversal.
While Ethereum faces short-term bearish pressure, The DAO Security Fund represents a long-term boost for Ethereum’s ecosystem, leveraging unclaimed funds from nearly a decade ago to strengthen security. For investors, the key will be monitoring whether ETH can maintain support levels near $2,700 while benefiting from improved network protections.
