Ethereum Launches Clear Signing Feature to Fight Crypto Wallet Scams

The Ethereum community has introduced a new security feature called Clear Signing, designed to protect crypto users from one of the industry’s biggest risks, blind signing.

The feature allows users to clearly read and understand transaction details before approving them. Instead of confusing hexadecimal code, users will now see human-readable transaction information. The goal is to reduce scams, malicious smart contracts, and wallet-draining attacks that have caused billions in losses across the crypto market.

Why Blind Signing Became a Major Problem

Blind signing happens when users approve blockchain transactions without fully understanding what they are signing. In many cases, wallets only display unreadable code or incomplete information, making it easy for attackers to trick users into approving harmful transactions.

The Ethereum Foundation described blind signing as a “structural flaw” in crypto security. According to the foundation, transaction approval should serve as the final defense line for protecting digital assets. However, that protection becomes useless when users cannot properly verify transaction details.

The issue gained even more attention after the massive Bybit hack last year, where attackers reportedly manipulated transaction signatures through a compromised third-party service provider. The incident resulted in approximately $1.4 billion in losses.

What the Clear Signing Feature Does

The new “What You See Is What You Sign” system aims to solve this problem by making transaction approvals transparent and easier to understand.

Instead of showing complex strings of code, Clear Signing displays readable transaction descriptions before users approve them. This helps users identify suspicious requests and avoid accidentally authorizing malicious smart contracts.

The feature was introduced through the Ethereum Foundation’s Trillion Dollar Security Initiative. It was initially developed by Ledger using the open-source ERC-7730 token standard.

Major Wallet Providers Back the Initiative

Several leading crypto wallet providers and blockchain security firms are already supporting the Clear Signing initiative.

Among the platforms involved are Trezor, MetaMask, Keycard, WalletConnect, Argot, Sourcify, Zama, ZKnox, and Fireblocks.

Trezor Chief Technology Officer Tomáš Sušánka said attackers have repeatedly exploited blind signing because users lacked tools capable of distinguishing malicious transactions from legitimate ones. According to Sušánka, many users unknowingly approved harmful smart contracts and lost their funds. He described Clear Signing as a major step toward improving security across the crypto industry.

Trezor plans to implement the feature before June 30.

Ethereum Pushes for Better User Protection

The launch of Clear Signing comes at a time when crypto-related scams and hacks continue to grow more advanced.

Blockchain security firms and developers have spent years improving wallet protection, but phishing attacks and malicious contract approvals remain a serious threat. State-backed hacking groups, including North Korean cyber operators, have also been linked to billions of dollars in stolen crypto assets over the past decade.

By making transaction approvals easier to understand, Ethereum hopes Clear Signing will reduce human error and help users better protect their digital assets.

Ethereum’s new Clear Signing feature aims to eliminate blind signing by replacing unreadable code with human-readable transaction details. Major wallets like Ledger, Trezor, and MetaMask are already supporting the initiative to improve crypto security.
