- Ethereum aims to complete its post-quantum and post-AI security transition by December 2028, one year ahead of its original target.
- The upgrade will require three additional network upgrades as developers prepare to protect ETH accounts against future cryptographic threats.
Ethereum is aiming to complete its transition to quantum-resistant security by December 2028, bringing forward its previous target by one year. The accelerated timeline was outlined by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake at Devcon 8 in Mumbai on November 3, 2026, as developers prepare to replace cryptographic systems that could become vulnerable to future quantum computing and artificial intelligence advances.
Drake said Ethereum hopes to complete the full post-quantum and post-AI transition by December 2028. However, the date is an ambitious development target, not a confirmed deadline or a formal replacement of the foundation’s existing roadmap.
“Our hope is that by December 2028 we’ll be able to wrap up the full post-quantum and post-AI transition,” Drake said.
The distinction is important because the Ethereum Foundation’s September 2025 roadmap still sets December 2029 as the target for achieving quantum resistance. Drake’s latest remarks signal an effort to finish the work earlier, but the published roadmap remains unchanged for now.
Ethereum’s 2028 Timeline Requires Three More Network Upgrades
Ethereum developers face a demanding schedule to meet the proposed December 2028 target. According to Drake, the network will need three additional upgrades within approximately 24 months, following an earlier milestone expected in 2027.
These upgrades will introduce quantum-resistant security measures across Ethereum’s infrastructure. Rather than relying on a single network overhaul, the transition will involve several stages to prepare the network’s execution, consensus and data layers.
The early 2027 milestone will be an important first step. Developers must then deliver the three additional upgrades within the following two years to stay on track for the December 2028 goal.
However, the schedule still carries execution risks. Delays to the initial milestone or subsequent network upgrades could push completion closer to the foundation’s original December 2029 target.
The foundation is also expected to reassess its published quantum-resistance roadmap in January 2027, which could provide more clarity on the proposed acceleration.
Why this is stronger: It establishes the news immediately, avoids presenting 2028 as an officially confirmed deadline, and explains the sequence of upgrades without suggesting all three must happen after the early 2027 milestone without any overlap.
The Ethereum Foundation still targets December 2029 for quantum resistance, while researcher Justin Drake hopes to complete the transition by December 2028.
