- IOTA develops YumeProof to verify image authenticity and detect tampering instantly.
- The app combines blockchain, cryptographic signing, and device sensors to combat AI-generated misinformation.
AI-generated misinformation is becoming a major problem, especially with hyperrealistic deepfakes flooding the internet. IOTA is stepping up with a real-world solution to verify the originality of images and fight fake media.

The Challenge of AI-Driven Misinformation
In 2023, Virginia Tech professor Cayce Myers warned about the growing sophistication of AI deepfakes, making it harder to identify false content. Crypto influencer Salima highlighted how hundreds of convincing fake news stories appeared online shortly after Google Veo 3’s release. This flood of manipulated media is known as “algorithmic disinformation at industrial scale,” where fake speeches and misleading headlines are widely shared and believed.

IOTA Identity Provides a Strong Foundation
To address this, IOTA Identity technology helps verify the credentials of content creators. While some users were skeptical, this approach laid the groundwork for stronger digital trust. Global projects like World Network, supported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, are also working to prove user authenticity and fight fake accounts.
Introducing YumeProof: The Winner of IOTA Malaysia Hackathon 2025
YumeProof is an innovative app developed as the winner of the IOTA Malaysia hackathon in July 2025. It offers “proof of real image” and “proof of real device” to confirm image authenticity. YumeProof combines three key components:
- The IOTA blockchain for immutable proof anchoring
- Instant cryptographic signing when the image is captured
- Hardware attestation using Google Play Integrity API
This combination makes image tampering instantly detectable.Although developers have not yet published the full technical details, YumeProof strengthens verification by using device sensors like LiDAR and ToF, along with Li-Fi light pulses.

Securing Digital Content for the Future
By blending provenance, metadata, physics-based sensors, and AI, YumeProof raises the security level, making faking images too costly and difficult to be practical. This builds on IOTA Identity v1.6, which already supports verifiable digital product authenticity through projects like ObjectID.io.
As AI misinformation grows more advanced, IOTA’s YumeProof app offers a promising tool to protect digital content and restore trust online.
