- PayPal USD launches on Stellar for fast, low-fee payments.
- Stellar’s upgrades and new stablecoins boost its ecosystem.
PayPal’s US dollar stablecoin, PYUSD, has officially launched on the Stellar blockchain, promising faster, cheaper, and more secure payments. This move marks a significant milestone for both Stellar and the broader stablecoin ecosystem.
Stellar Becomes a Hub for Fast, Low-Fee Payments
PYUSD went live on Stellar with roughly five-second transaction finality and minimal fees, positioning Stellar as a payments-focused blockchain. Integration with platforms like PayPal and Venmo allows users to transfer funds quickly while benefiting from Stellar’s scalable infrastructure. The launch also introduces Stellar Asset Contract-compatible contracts, enabling more seamless payments across the network.

The Stellar Development Foundation praised the move, highlighting its potential to transform everyday payments. Community responses have been overwhelmingly positive, reflecting optimism about the network’s future.
PayPal and Stellar’s Whisk Upgrade Enhances Scalability
The timing of PYUSD’s launch coincides with Stellar’s Protocol 23 upgrade, “Whisk.” This upgrade introduced parallel smart contract execution and optimized transaction throughput, reaching up to 5,000 transactions per second (TPS). By reducing latency and costs while increasing capacity, Whisk lays the foundation for PYUSD to scale efficiently across Stellar wallets, anchors, and payment partners. Developers also benefit from unified event formatting, making it easier to combine traditional Stellar operations with smart contracts.
Yield-Bearing Stablecoins Expand Opportunities
Stellar’s stablecoin ecosystem is growing beyond PYUSD. Ondo Finance recently launched USDY, a yield-bearing stablecoin backed by US Treasuries and bank deposits. Unlike conventional stablecoins, USDY automatically accrues daily yield while maintaining liquidity. The token is already integrated with Stellar-based applications like LOBSTR, Aquarius, Meru, Soroswap, and Decaf Wallet, demonstrating the network’s expanding capabilities.

PayPal Launch Strengthens XLM Price Outlook
Despite the positive developments, Stellar’s native token, XLM, saw a slight dip of nearly 1.3% on launch day, trading at $0.39 as of writing. Short-term price fluctuations often reflect liquidity and market sentiment rather than fundamentals. In the long term, however, Stellar’s partnerships with major fintech players, combined with technical upgrades like Whisk and innovative stablecoin offerings, strengthen its ecosystem and provide a solid foundation for potential growth.

With the integration of PYUSD and the introduction of yield-bearing stablecoins, Stellar is solidifying its role as a blockchain optimized for payments and financial innovation.
