Ripple’s Multichain Push
Ripple has announced a major upgrade aimed at increasing adoption and utility for RLUSD. The company revealed plans to expand RLUSD across multiple layer 2 networks, including Optimism, Base, Kraken’s Ink, and Unichain. This expansion leverages Wormhole’s Native Token Transfers (NTT) standard, allowing RLUSD to move natively across supported blockchains without relying on wrapped or synthetic versions.
The move marks RLUSD as the first regulated U.S.–based stablecoin to operate on these L2 chains. This enhances scalability, efficiency, and security while enabling a wide range of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. Ripple emphasized that this multichain approach is designed to preserve liquidity, maintain regulatory compliance, and open doors for users to engage seamlessly across networks.
XRP Gains Spotlight in Multichain Ecosystem
Ripple’s announcement also highlights significant implications for XRP. By supporting wrapped XRP (wXRP), the upgrade enables premier liquidity pairs between RLUSD and wXRP on Optimism, Base, Ink, and Unichain. This integration positions XRP for broader adoption, strengthening its role in the growing multichain economy.
Users can now swap, lend, or make payments using XRP and RLUSD directly within DeFi applications on these chains, eliminating the need to bridge back to the XRP Ledger or Ethereum mainnet. For the XRP community, this step is seen as a key driver for potential future price gains as adoption increases.
Roadmap for RLUSD Expansion
The rollout of RLUSD on these layer 2 networks begins with a test phase in December 2025. Currently, RLUSD is already live on Ethereum and the XRP Ledger following its issuance under a New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) Trust Charter. Ripple plans a larger multichain deployment in 2026, contingent on NYDFS regulatory approval.
With this strategic expansion, Ripple not only reinforces RLUSD’s position as a leading regulated stablecoin but also strengthens XRP’s utility across DeFi ecosystems. The development underscores Ripple’s commitment to creating a more connected, multichain crypto landscape while adhering to regulatory standards.
