Ripple Joins x402 Foundation as XRP and RLUSD Target the Future of AI Payments

  • Ripple joined the x402 Foundation to support AI payments with XRP and RLUSD.
  • The move strengthens XRP’s long-term utility but does not guarantee higher prices.

Ripple has joined the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member, marking another step in its effort to position XRP Ledger (XRPL) and RLUSD at the center of AI-powered digital payments. The move gives Ripple a role in shaping an open payment standard designed to enable AI agents to pay for online services without human involvement.

The announcement comes as AI applications increasingly require instant, low-cost payment systems for accessing APIs, cloud computing, storage, and other digital resources.

Ripple is proud to join the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member.

As AI agents begin to take on more of the transaction lifecycle, they'll need a way to pay that's as fast and reliable as the way they already exchange data. We've been helping build that future on the XRP Ledger… https://t.co/eSzTyXBQFm

Ripple Expands Its AI Payments Strategy

The x402 Foundation officially launched under the Linux Foundation on July 14 after Coinbase contributed the x402 protocol as an open standard for internet-native payments.

The protocol modernizes the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code by creating a machine-readable payment process. When an AI agent requests a paid service, the server responds with the payment amount, supported asset, and receiving address. The agent then completes the transaction automatically, allowing the service to be delivered immediately.

Ripple joined the foundation alongside nearly 40 Premier Members from the technology, payments, and blockchain industries. The list includes AWS, Google, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Circle, Coinbase, Shopify, Cloudflare, and American Express.

By joining the foundation, Ripple ensures that both XRP and RLUSD are supported within a payment standard that could play an important role in the growing machine economy.

XRPL Builds Momentum in Agentic Payments

Ripple’s membership follows months of development focused on AI integration.

In June, the company introduced the XRPL AI Starter Kit, which provides developers with tools for building AI applications that use XRP and RLUSD for payments. Ripple-backed t54.ai later launched the XRPL AI Hub, giving developers additional resources for creating AI-powered services on the network.

The XRPL Foundation also confirmed that XRP Ledger has processed more than one million agentic transactions since adding x402 support.

XRPL’s technical features make it suitable for automated payments. Transactions settle within three to five seconds, while each transaction carries a predictable fee of about $0.0002. AI agents can use non-custodial wallets funded with XRP or RLUSD to pay for services such as cloud computing, APIs, and data access without relying on traditional banking systems.

XRPL Still Trails Early Leaders

Although one million agentic transactions represent meaningful progress, XRPL remains behind the current leaders.

Coinbase’s Base network has processed more than 119 million x402 payments, while Solana has handled roughly 35 million transactions. Both networks entered the market earlier and settled most of their payments using USDC.

However, the x402 Foundation operates as a network-neutral organization, allowing multiple blockchains and payment methods to compete under the same standard. Ripple’s governance role could prove valuable as the protocol evolves and adoption grows.

Can AI Payments Support XRP’s Long-Term Growth?

Ripple’s latest partnership strengthens the long-term utility case for XRP, but it may not trigger an immediate price rally on its own.

The bigger opportunity lies in whether AI agents become major users of blockchain payment infrastructure. If demand for autonomous digital payments grows, networks capable of settling transactions quickly and cheaply could benefit.

XRP already offers low transaction costs and fast settlement, giving it a competitive technical advantage. Still, long-term growth will depend on Ripple’s ability to turn developer adoption, institutional partnerships, and governance influence into sustained transaction volume rather than announcements alone.
