- Ripple has raised $500 million in its first funding round in six years, boosting its valuation to $40 billion.
- The company is diversifying beyond XRP payments by acquiring treasury management and prime brokerage firms.
Ripple, has raised $500 million in a strategic investment round, marking its first capital raise in six years. The round included major investors such as affiliates of Fortress Investment Group, Citadel Securities, Pantera Capital, Galaxy Digital, Brevan Howard, and Marshall Wace. The funding not only strengthens Ripple’s financial position but also deepens relationships with key Wall Street partners.
This strategic raise values Ripple at $40 billion, a 263% increase from its previous valuation of $11.3 billion in January 2024, when the company bought back $285 million worth of shares from early investors and employees. This comes after Ripple’s recent $1 billion tender offer at the same valuation, signaling confidence in the company’s long-term growth.
Wall Street Eyes Crypto
Ripple’s massive valuation boost highlights the growing interest of Wall Street in crypto firms, particularly after the passing of stablecoin regulations in the US. Recent examples include a $500 million investment in crypto exchange Kraken by a Wall Street consortium and Circle’s IPO, which valued the firm at $6.9 billion before investor activity pushed it over $28 billion.
By tripling its valuation, Ripple is setting a benchmark for other crypto companies looking to attract institutional investment, raising the stakes for the industry as a whole.
Diversifying Beyond XRP
Since its launch in 2012, Ripple has primarily focused on leveraging the XRP Ledger blockchain to provide cross-border payments. However, the company has been aggressively expanding into new markets. Last month, Ripple acquired GTreasury, a corporate treasury management platform, for $1 billion. Earlier in April, it purchased Hidden Road, a non-bank prime broker, for $1.25 billion to provide institutions with clearing, prime brokerage, and financing services across digital assets, derivatives, and more.
These moves come amid growing competition as firms like Stripe, Circle, and Bitfinex’s sister companies develop new blockchains for US dollar stablecoin payments. Even traditional payment providers are exploring crypto; Western Union recently announced plans to deploy a stablecoin on the Solana blockchain for cross-border transfers.
Ripple’s $500 million strategic raise and $40 billion valuation underscore its ambition to become a central player in both crypto and traditional finance. By diversifying into treasury management and prime brokerage while maintaining its XRP-driven payments network, Ripple is positioning itself to capture more of the growing crypto-finance market.
