  • Tether is adding XAU₮ to Ledn, allowing users to borrow against tokenized gold without selling it.
  • The move expands Tether’s $23 billion gold strategy and use of XAU₮ in crypto finance.

Tether is pushing deeper into real-world asset integration by expanding the use of its tokenized gold product, Tether Gold (XAU₮), into crypto lending. The move brings gold-backed borrowing closer to mainstream digital finance as Ledn prepares to support XAU₮ on its platform.

Tether Gold moves into crypto-backed lending

Tether is expanding XAU₮ utility through a new integration with crypto lender Ledn. The platform will allow users to hold and trade tokenized gold and later borrow against it.

Each XAU₮ token represents one fine troy ounce of physical gold stored in Swiss vaults. This structure allows users to gain exposure to gold without handling physical bullion while still keeping ownership verified on-chain.

Ledn confirmed that borrowing against XAU₮ will be introduced later in 2026. The model follows its existing Bitcoin-backed loan system, where users can unlock liquidity without selling their assets.

Borrowing against gold without selling assets

The new system is designed to give users financial flexibility while preserving long-term exposure to gold. Instead of selling XAU₮, holders will be able to use it as collateral to access stablecoin loans.

Ledn stated that client collateral will remain fully backed on a 1:1 basis and will not be reused or lent out. This approach is meant to strengthen trust in crypto lending after the risks exposed during the 2022 lending crisis.

The company says demand is increasing for financial products that combine asset ownership with liquidity access.

“As digital assets become an increasingly important part of the global economy, demand is growing for solutions that combine long-term ownership with financial flexibility,” said Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino.

Tether expands its $23 billion gold position

Tether’s move into lending comes alongside a rapid expansion of its gold holdings. The company reported that XAU₮ reserves reached over 707,000 fine troy ounces by March 31, 2026, up significantly from the previous year.

The market value of XAU₮ also climbed from about $2.25 billion to more than $3.3 billion in early 2026.

The broader $23 billion figure reflects Tether’s total gold exposure across both XAU₮ and reserves backing USDT. Reports indicate that Tether holds over 130 metric tons of gold, making it one of the largest private gold holders in the digital asset sector.

Tether has also streamlined its gold strategy by shutting down older products like Alloy and aUSDT, focusing more heavily on XAU₮ as its main tokenized gold asset.

Gold-backed lending enters the digital asset space

Gold-backed lending is a long-established practice in traditional finance. Banks have used physical gold as collateral for decades.

Tether and Ledn are now bringing that structure into blockchain markets. Tokenized gold can move across digital networks while still representing real bullion stored in secure vaults.

This setup allows users to maintain exposure to gold while accessing liquidity through loans. A borrower can deposit XAU₮ and receive stablecoins without liquidating their holdings.

The model also strengthens the use case for XAU₮ beyond simple trading or holding.

Tokenized gold use cases continue to expand

Tether’s gold strategy is expanding beyond lending. The company recently partnered with Fasset to launch a Visa card that rewards users with XAU₮ cashback, pushing tokenized gold closer to everyday spending.

Tether has also increased investments in Bitcoin mining, AI infrastructure, renewable energy, and financial platforms, showing a broader shift toward diversified digital and physical asset integration.

With Ledn’s upcoming support, XAU₮ is set to play a more active role in crypto lending markets. The integration positions tokenized gold as both a store of value and a functional financial tool in decentralized finance.

Conclusion

Tether’s expansion into gold-backed lending marks a major step in connecting traditional assets with digital finance. By bringing XAU₮ into Ledn’s lending system, the company is strengthening its $23 billion gold strategy while widening real-world use cases for tokenized bullion.
