Toncoin Rebrands as Gram as TON Revives Its Original Name

Toncoin is changing its name to Gram, bringing back the original name linked to Telegram’s early blockchain plans. The rebrand is expected to take about three weeks, while TON will remain the name of the blockchain.

Toncoin Becomes Gram as TON Keeps Its Network Name

The rebrand separates the TON blockchain from its asset. TON will remain the network’s name, while Gram will become the name of the asset.

Gram revives the name used in Telegram’s original blockchain plans. Telegram initially intended to launch the Telegram Open Network with Gram as its asset.

The plan later faced regulatory action in the United States. In 2020, Telegram settled with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

As part of the settlement, Telegram agreed to return more than $1.2 billion to investors and pay an $18.5 million penalty over the unregistered Gram offering.

Telegram then withdrew from the project. Community developers continued building the network as The Open Network, while its asset became known as Toncoin.

Gram Rebrand Fits Into Durov’s TON Roadmap

The return of the Gram name forms part of Pavel Durov’s “Make TON Great Again” roadmap. The seven-step plan aims to reshape TON’s role within Telegram and the wider crypto market.

Several changes have already been introduced under the roadmap. These include network upgrades and lower transaction fees.

Durov has said TON fees have fallen sixfold to almost zero. He also said Telegram would take a larger role in the network and become its biggest validator.

The roadmap also focuses on technical improvements. These include a redesigned website, new tools for developers and performance upgrades.

The rebrand could give the ecosystem a clearer structure. TON will represent the blockchain, while Gram will identify the asset running across the network.

Telegram’s Role in TON Continues to Grow

The move also reflects Telegram’s renewed involvement with TON after years of separation from the original project.

In 2025, the TON Foundation said TON would become the exclusive blockchain infrastructure for Telegram’s Mini App ecosystem.

That connection gives the network a major role within Telegram’s expanding app ecosystem. The shift from Toncoin to Gram now adds another link to the project’s original history.

For TON users, the key change is the asset’s name rather than the underlying blockchain. The network will remain TON, while its native asset moves forward under the Gram name.
