- Uniswap is activating its long-awaited fee switch after the community approved the proposal, introducing token burns and new liquidity incentives.
- The upgrade has lifted UNI’s price and strengthened its long-term value.
Uniswap is on the verge of one of the most significant upgrades in its seven-year history as its long-awaited protocol fee switch, known as UNIfication, moves closer to activation. The proposal has already crossed the required voting threshold and is expected to go live later this week, marking a major shift in how value is captured within the decentralized exchange ecosystem.
The UNification proposal reached the critical 40 million vote mark needed for approval, with nearly 62 million votes cast in favor since voting opened on December 20. With voting set to close on Christmas Day, opposition remains negligible, highlighting strong community alignment around the changes.
Once the vote officially passes, a two-day time lock period will follow. According to Uniswap Labs CEO Hayden Adams, this period will allow Uniswap v2 and v3 fee switches to activate on the Unichain mainnet. This step will trigger a series of changes designed to reshape Uniswap’s token economics.
What the UNification Upgrade Introduces
A central feature of the proposal is the burning of 100 million UNI tokens from the Uniswap Foundation’s treasury. By reducing the circulating supply, the upgrade aims to improve the supply-demand balance of the UNI token. In addition, the protocol will roll out a new Protocol Fee Discount Auctions system, which is expected to increase returns for liquidity providers and make participation on the platform more attractive.
Market participants widely view these changes as strengthening UNI’s long-term value, especially for holders seeking clearer value accrual mechanisms.
UNI Price Reacts to Governance Progress
Market reaction to the proposal has been notably positive. Since voting opened, UNI has gained roughly 25%, currently trading around $6.08. This recovery helped the token rebound from a month long slump that saw prices dip to a seven-month low of $4.88 during a broader market pullback.
Earlier signals also showed investor optimism. When news of the UNIFication proposal first surfaced in early November, UNI surged nearly 40%, climbing from about $7 to a local high near $9.70 within days.
Strong Industry Backing and Future Commitments
The proposal has drawn support from several prominent figures in the crypto space, including Variant founder Jesse Waldren, Synthetix founder Kain Warwick, and former Uniswap Labs engineer Ian Lapham. Opposition remains minimal, with only a tiny fraction of votes cast against the upgrade.
Importantly, the Uniswap Foundation has reassured developers that protocol development will remain a priority. Plans are in place to establish a Growth Budget, which will distribute 20 million UNI tokens to support builders and ensure continued innovation across the ecosystem.
As the fee switch prepares to go live, Uniswap appears poised to enter a new phase, one focused on sustainability, stronger token economics, and long-term growth.
