- The XRP Ledger is supporting a $280 million regulated diamond tokenization project, strengthening Ripple’s role in real-world asset adoption.
- The initiative links certified diamonds to on-chain records, enabling secure, compliant trading within the UAE framework.
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) has taken a major step in real-world asset adoption by supporting a regulated diamond tokenization initiative valued at more than $280 million. The project, led by Dubai-based Billiton Diamond in partnership with UK firm Ctrl Alt, ranks among the largest commodity tokenization efforts in the Middle East and reinforces Ripple’s growing presence in the real-world asset (RWA) sector.
The initiative converts certified polished diamonds into digital tokens on the XRP Ledger. These assets, worth over AED 1 billion, are securely stored in the UAE while ownership and certification details are recorded directly on-chain. This structure allows the project to digitize physical diamonds without compromising regulatory compliance or asset integrity.

How Diamond Tokenization Works on the XRP Ledger
Ctrl Alt handled the tokenization process using the XRP Ledger’s infrastructure. Ripple integrated its custody technology to protect the digital assets, ensuring secure storage and controlled access. Each token includes detailed information on the diamond’s grading and certification, creating a verifiable link between the physical asset and its digital record.
By embedding this data on-chain, the system reduces reliance on manual verification and enhances transparency. Market participants can confirm authenticity and ownership through the blockchain, which improves trust in high-value commodity transactions.
Regulatory Oversight in the UAE
The project operates fully within the UAE’s regulatory framework. The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) provides oversight, while the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) manages coordination. This structure ensures compliance while keeping the platform ready for integration into broader financial workflows.
Operating under a clean regulatory environment positions the initiative for future expansion. It also sets a precedent for how regulated real-world assets can move on-chain without regulatory uncertainty.
Why XRPL Was Selected for High-Value Assets
The XRP Ledger was chosen for its fast settlement speeds and low transaction fees, which remain critical for large commodity transactions. These features make the network suitable for handling high-value assets like diamonds, where efficiency and cost control are essential.
The XRPL also supports the inclusion of asset-specific data within tokens, strengthening traceability and reducing counterparty risk. These advantages continue to attract enterprise-grade tokenization projects.
Market Access and Future Plans
Billiton Diamond plans to launch a centralized platform for real-time inventory management. Once regulatory approvals are secured, the platform is expected to enable the listing of tokenized diamonds on both primary and secondary markets. This move could improve liquidity and broaden access to the diamond market.
As regulated real-world asset tokenization gains traction, this $280 million diamond initiative positions the XRP Ledger and Ripple at the center of compliant asset digitization efforts.
