Zcash ETF ZCSH Files for 3-for-1 Share Split as Assets Near $890M

  • Grayscale’s Zcash ETF ZCSH has filed for a 3-for-1 share split after strong ZEC gains pushed its assets near $890 million.
  • The split will lower the price per share without changing investors’ total holdings.

Grayscale has filed for a 3-for-1 forward share split for its Zcash ETF, ZCSH, after a sharp rise in ZEC pushed the fund’s share price higher. The Zcash ETF has attracted more than $233 million in net inflows since its August launch, taking its net assets to about $890 million.

Grayscale submitted the filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on September 19 for the ZCSH fund, which trades on NYSE Arca. The proposed split will increase the number of outstanding shares while reducing the price of each share.

ZCSH Share Split Set for September 30

Under the filing, investors who hold ZCSH shares at the close of trading on September 28 will receive two additional shares for every share they own.

FORM OF ZCASH FILLINGS

The additional shares are scheduled to be distributed after the market closes on September 29. Split-adjusted trading is expected to begin before the market opens on September 30.

Grayscale will keep the ZCSH ticker and the fund’s existing CUSIP number after the split.

The move does not change the total value of an investor’s position. For example, an investor holding 10 shares worth $300 each would have a position worth $3,000. After the 3-for-1 split, that investor would hold 30 shares worth about $100 each, leaving the total value at $3,000.

The net asset value per share is therefore expected to fall to roughly one-third of its pre-split level.

Zcash Rally Pushes ZCSH Assets Higher

The proposed split comes after an exceptional rise in ZEC over the past year. According to the source analysis, Zcash has climbed more than 2,800%, lifting the value of ZCSH shares and increasing investor interest in the fund.

ZCSH has recorded more than $233 million in net inflows since it began trading on August 25. Its net assets have grown to approximately $890 million, with September 8 marking its strongest inflow day after about $112 million entered the fund.

The higher share price can also create a practical barrier for investors using traditional brokerage accounts. While crypto exchanges commonly allow investors to purchase fractions of cryptocurrencies, fractional share purchases are not universally available through brokerage platforms.

A forward split allows Grayscale to lower the price of each ZCSH share without reducing the value of existing holdings.

Grayscale has used a similar approach before. In December 2020, the company carried out a 9-for-1 split of its Ethereum Trust after the rise in ETH had pushed the trust’s share price higher.

ZCSH Entered the Market With an Existing Zcash Base

The Zcash ETF did not begin from zero. Grayscale converted its existing Zcash Trust into the ETF structure, bringing approximately $313 million worth of ZEC into the fund when trading began.

That conversion gave ZCSH a substantial asset base from its first day on the market. Subsequent inflows and the rise in ZEC have since increased the fund’s total assets.

The growth also comes as institutional interest in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies receives more attention. Zcash reached an intraday high of $1,521 on September 19, according to the source analysis. The same day, Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang disclosed that he had purchased ZEC, describing Zcash as a private complement to Bitcoin.

Huang also said he supported Zcash’s developer fund and pointed to the importance of continued development as threats involving artificial intelligence and quantum computing advance.

Zcash Combines Transparent and Private Transactions

Zcash differs from Bitcoin by giving users the option to make either transparent or shielded transactions.

Shielded transactions use zk-SNARKs, a form of zero-knowledge cryptography that allows the network to verify a transaction without publicly revealing the sender, recipient or amount.

ZEC also shares Bitcoin’s 21 million maximum supply. The combination of optional transaction privacy and a fixed supply has helped maintain Zcash’s presence across major cryptocurrency markets. This has also distinguished ZEC from privacy-focused cryptocurrencies such as Monero, which has faced delistings from several exchanges.

With the ZCSH split scheduled to take effect at the end of September, the number of shares available to investors will increase while the value represented by each individual share falls proportionally. The change is designed to make the fund’s per-share price more accessible without changing the value of existing investments.
