Zcash Launches Zillions Wallet With Ledger Support and Faster Private Transfers

Zcash has launched Zillions, a browser-based wallet designed to make private ZEC transactions easier to access. Released on October 27, the wallet supports both shielded and transparent transfers, Ledger hardware wallets, and faster account syncing without requiring users to install a desktop application.

The new wallet is built using Anoma technology and aims to simplify how users manage Zcash while keeping transaction details private when they choose shielded transfers.

Zillions Brings Shielded Zcash Transfers to the Browser

Zillions allows users to send and receive ZEC through two transaction options: transparent and shielded transfers. It displays separate balances for each type, helping users manage their funds and select the appropriate option when sending payments.

Shielded transactions are a key feature of Zcash because they can protect transaction details, including sender, recipient, and amount, depending on how the transaction is made. Transparent transactions, by contrast, expose transaction information on the public blockchain.

The browser-based design also removes the need to install a separate desktop application. Zillions works with Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and other compatible browsers, making it easier for users to access their ZEC.

Ledger Support Available at Launch

Zillions includes support for Ledger hardware wallets, allowing users to sign transactions using their Ledger devices. Users can select an account through the wallet interface and verify outgoing transactions on their hardware wallet before signing.

The team has also announced plans to add Keystone hardware wallet support, with integration expected shortly after launch.

Zillions also offers a separate browser extension called Keychain. It allows users to create, import, and manage multiple Zcash accounts or seed phrases, then switch between accounts within the wallet.

The extension handles signing while keeping private keys isolated from the web application, adding another layer of separation between account credentials and the browser interface.

Sandboxed Security and Faster Account Syncing

Security and ease of use are central to the Zillions design. The application uses sandboxing and is designed to operate without administrator or root permissions. According to the team, it can also run without access to local files or control over other parts of the device.

Transaction preparation and proof generation take place on the user’s device. Zillions uses multicore processing to speed up proof generation, which is required for shielded transactions.

The wallet’s Shielded Sync system is designed to reduce the time needed to synchronize accounts. The team reports that older accounts can sync in under 30 seconds on a lightweight laptop with a standard internet connection.

These features aim to reduce the delays that can make private blockchain transactions more difficult for everyday users. No security breach was reported in the launch information provided.

Zillions Launch Follows Other Zcash Performance Improvements

The launch comes as developers continue working to improve Zcash transaction performance.

On August 29, Zakura published open-source cryptography libraries and developer benchmarks reporting transaction-preparation times below 200 milliseconds in many cases. Its reported tests also showed mobile proof generation running more than 14 times faster and desktop proof generation more than five times faster.

The libraries were released under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses. The reported improvements did not require a Zcash network upgrade.

These developments address different parts of the transaction process, from preparing cryptographic proofs to making wallet synchronization faster. Together, they could help improve the experience of using shielded ZEC across supported devices.

Zcash Prepares for the NU7 Network Upgrade

Zillions’ release also comes ahead of Zcash’s planned NU7 network upgrade. The Zcash Foundation released Zebra 7.0.0 on October 22, confirming support for NU7. The upgrade is scheduled to activate at mainnet block 3,543,405, around November 5.

NU7 is expected to reduce target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Daily ZEC issuance will remain unchanged because the reward per block will be reduced to one-third of its previous level.

Node operators must upgrade their software before activation to remain on the network’s consensus chain.

While Zillions is a wallet-level development and NU7 is a network upgrade, both form part of ongoing efforts to improve the Zcash user experience.

What Zillions Means for Zcash Users

Zillions gives Zcash users another option for managing ZEC, with browser access, shielded transfers, account management tools, and hardware-wallet support available through a single interface.

Its focus on client-side proof generation and faster synchronization could make private transactions more convenient, particularly for users who do not want to manage a full desktop wallet.

However, users should still verify wallet links, protect their recovery phrases, and check transaction details before signing. Hardware-wallet support and sandboxing can reduce certain security risks, but they do not eliminate every threat.

With Ledger support available and Keystone integration planned, Zillions is positioning itself as an accessible entry point for users who want to manage ZEC and make shielded transfers without installing a traditional desktop application.
