Bitcoin Drops Below $73,000 as Iran Conflict Sparks $1 Billion Crypto Liquidation Shock

  • Bitcoin fell below $73,000 after U.S. airstrikes on Iran triggered panic across global markets and weakened risk assets.
  • Nearly $1 billion in crypto liquidations followed, mostly from overleveraged long positions, as traders were caught off guard.

Bitcoin faced a sharp decline after rising geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran rattled global financial markets. The sudden move pushed the crypto market into heavy losses, wiping out close to $1 billion in leveraged positions within 24 hours.

Bitcoin Falls Below Key Support Level

Bitcoin dropped below the $73,000 level, hitting an intraday low of around $72,912 during Asian trading hours. This marked its weakest price in months as selling pressure intensified across major exchanges.

The decline followed U.S. airstrikes on an Iranian military site near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route. The escalation added fresh uncertainty to already fragile market conditions, prompting traders to reduce exposure to risk assets.

Over the past 24 hours, Bitcoin fell around 3.4%, while weekly losses deepened to more than 6%. The breakdown below support at $74,000 raised concerns that further downside could follow if momentum continues.

Nearly $1 Billion Wiped Out in Liquidations

The sharp market move triggered a massive liquidation event across the crypto sector. According to market data, total liquidations reached approximately $958.8 million in a single day.

A striking imbalance was recorded, with long positions accounting for about $897 million of the total losses. Short positions made up only a small fraction at around $61 million, showing how heavily traders were positioned for a rebound that did not happen.

Bitcoin led the liquidation wave with roughly $386 million wiped out. Ether followed with about $246 million in liquidations, reflecting broad pressure across top assets.

Altcoins Also Suffer Sharp Declines

The sell-off extended beyond Bitcoin as most major cryptocurrencies moved lower in tandem with broader market fear.

Ether fell about 4.2%, slipping below the $2,000 mark. Solana dropped around 3.5% to $80.57, while XRP declined 3.6% to $1.28. Dogecoin also lost 3.2%, trading near $0.0979.

Despite the broader downturn, a few tokens showed relative strength, but overall sentiment remained weak across the market.

Geopolitical Shock Triggers Risk-Off Sentiment

The market downturn was largely driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East. U.S. Central Command confirmed strikes near the Strait of Hormuz and reported drone activity in the region.

BREAKING: Iran's IRGC releases a statement saying that it has retaliated to the US strike on an Iranian military position in the Strait of Hormuz by attacking a US airbase in Kuwait.

Iran responded with attacks on a U.S. base in Kuwait, further escalating fears of prolonged conflict. The developments pushed oil prices higher by nearly 5% and weighed heavily on global equities.

As risk-off sentiment spread, both traditional markets and crypto assets reacted negatively, showing how closely digital assets remain tied to global macro events.

Analysts Warn of Possible Deeper Correction

Market analysts warned that Bitcoin’s ability to hold the $72,000 support level is critical in the short term. A sustained break below this zone could open the door to a larger correction.

Some projections suggest a potential decline of 20% to 25% if bearish pressure intensifies. Traders are now closely watching whether buyers step in to stabilize the market after the heavy liquidation event.

Outlook Remains Uncertain as Volatility Persists

While some investors see the current drop as a liquidation reset rather than a structural collapse, uncertainty remains high. Much of the excess leverage has now been cleared, which could reduce short-term volatility.

However, with geopolitical tensions still unfolding, Bitcoin is likely to remain sensitive to global headlines. The next move will largely depend on whether support levels hold or break under renewed selling pressure.
