Bitcoin Spot ETFs Record $70.5M Outflows as Investors Pull Back

  • U.S. Bitcoin spot ETFs recorded $70.5 million in outflows, marking four straight days of withdrawals led by BlackRock and Fidelity.
  • Investors are watching closely as Bitcoin ETF demand shows short-term weakness despite strong long-term interest.

U.S. Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) extended their losing streak on May 20 after recording $70.5 million in net outflows. The decline marked the fourth straight trading day of withdrawals, raising concerns about short-term investor sentiment toward Bitcoin-related investment products.

The latest figures suggest that some institutional and retail investors may be reducing exposure as Bitcoin trades within a volatile range.

Major Bitcoin ETF Funds Lead Withdrawals

Two major issuers accounted for most of the daily outflows.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) recorded $61.5 million in net withdrawals. Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) followed with $10.1 million in outflows. Together, the two funds represented nearly all of the negative movement across U.S. Bitcoin spot ETFs.

Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley’s MSBT fund delivered a small positive result. The fund added $1.1 million in net inflows, though the gain was not enough to reverse the broader trend.

Bitcoin ETF Market Faces Short-Term Pressure

Bitcoin spot ETFs have attracted strong investor attention since receiving regulatory approval in January 2024. These products allow investors to gain Bitcoin exposure through regulated investment vehicles without directly holding the asset.

After months of healthy demand, the latest withdrawal streak points to changing short-term market behavior.

Bitcoin has traded between $60,000 and $70,000 in recent weeks. Price swings may have encouraged some investors to lock in profits or reduce risk exposure.

Broader market conditions may also be affecting flows. Economic uncertainty, portfolio adjustments, and shifts in investment strategy often influence ETF activity.

Why ETF Flows Matter for Bitcoin Investors

Spot Bitcoin ETF performance is closely watched because it can provide insight into institutional demand. Sustained inflows often suggest growing investor confidence. Consecutive outflows can signal caution or temporary weakness in market participation.

However, ETF data represents only one piece of the larger picture. Daily fund movements can be affected by portfolio rebalancing, tax strategies, or broader financial market developments. Analysts often advise investors to avoid making decisions based only on short-term ETF flow changes.

Long-term demand remains notable despite recent withdrawals. Bitcoin spot ETFs have still accumulated significant net inflows since launch.

Could This Be a Buying Opportunity?

Some investors may view the recent decline as a potential entry point. Those with a long-term outlook could see temporary selling pressure as an opportunity to build positions. Others may prefer to wait for stronger market signals before increasing exposure.

Market participants will likely watch upcoming ETF trading sessions closely to see whether the withdrawal trend continues or reverses. U.S. Bitcoin spot ETFs recorded $70.5 million in net outflows on May 20, extending withdrawals to four consecutive trading days. BlackRock and Fidelity led the decline, while limited inflows elsewhere failed to offset broader weakness.

While short-term sentiment appears cautious, Bitcoin spot ETFs continue to remain an important indicator of institutional interest in digital assets.
