Bitcoin Targets $125K as Short Squeeze Risk Builds Near $75K

  • Bitcoin holds near $74K as heavy short positions raise chances of a squeeze toward $125K.
  • Market direction depends on U.S.-Iran developments.

Bitcoin is holding steady after a strong weekly rally, but underlying signals suggest a major move could be approaching. Market positioning and global developments are now shaping the next potential breakout.

Bitcoin Holds Ground as Global Markets Pause

Bitcoin traded near $74,700 on Friday, showing only a slight daily dip but maintaining a solid weekly gain. This comes after a broader rally across global equities, which recently hit record highs before slowing down.

The pause in risk assets is largely tied to uncertainty surrounding ongoing U.S.-Iran ceasefire discussions. Optimism around a possible resolution has supported a “risk-on” sentiment, encouraging investors to lean into assets like Bitcoin.

Meanwhile, other major cryptocurrencies also posted weekly gains. Ethereum led with strong performance, while XRP, Solana, and Dogecoin followed with moderate increases.

Deeply Negative Funding Rates Signal Short Squeeze Risk

One of the most important signals beneath Bitcoin’s calm price action is the sharp drop in perpetual futures funding rates. These rates have fallen to levels last seen in 2023, indicating that a large portion of traders are betting against Bitcoin.

When funding rates turn negative, short traders pay long traders, reflecting heavy bearish positioning. This creates the perfect setup for a short squeeze.

According to ZeroStack CEO Daniel Reis-Faria, if Bitcoin continues rising under these conditions, forced liquidations of short positions could accelerate the price upward. In such a scenario, Bitcoin could surge rapidly, with projections pointing toward $125,000 within the next 30 to 60 days.

On-Chain Data Shows Many Investors Still at a Loss

Despite the bullish setup, on-chain data presents a more cautious outlook. Analysis of Bitcoin’s “True Market Mean” suggests that many active holders are currently underwater, meaning they bought at higher prices than the current level.

Historically, similar conditions have coincided with extended bearish phases, including the 2018–2019 downturn and the 2022–2023 market decline.

This creates a mixed outlook. While a short squeeze could drive prices sharply higher, those gains may be met with selling pressure from investors looking to exit at break-even or reduce losses.

Market Direction Hinges on Geopolitical Developments

The next major catalyst for Bitcoin appears to be geopolitical rather than purely technical. The outcome of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire discussions will likely influence investor sentiment across global markets.

If the ceasefire holds or expands, risk appetite could strengthen further, supporting Bitcoin’s bullish case. However, if tensions escalate again, markets may shift back to caution, limiting upside potential.

For now, Bitcoin sits at a critical point where both bullish and bearish forces are building. A breakout toward $125,000 is possible, but the path forward will depend on how these competing factors unfold.

Conclusion

Bitcoin’s current setup highlights a rare combination of heavy short positioning and cautious investor sentiment. This balance could trigger sharp price swings in the weeks ahead.

Whether the market leans toward a breakout or renewed selling pressure will largely depend on global developments and how traders react to them.
