BitGo Moves $7.3B WBTC Transfers to Chainlink CCIP, Replacing LayerZero

  • BitGo has selected Chainlink CCIP to handle WBTC’s $7.3 billion cross-chain transfers, replacing LayerZero.
  • The move gives BitGo more control over WBTC operations while expanding Chainlink’s role in blockchain interoperability.

BitGo has selected Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) as the exclusive infrastructure provider for Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) cross-chain transfers. The move replaces LayerZero and marks a major shift for one of the biggest Bitcoin-based assets in decentralized finance.

The migration covers WBTC’s $7.3 billion ecosystem and will bring cross-chain transfers under Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Token (CCT) standard. BitGo said the new setup will allow it to maintain control over WBTC contracts, transfer limits and other key operational settings.

BitGo Chooses Chainlink CCIP for WBTC Infrastructure

WBTC allows Bitcoin holders to use BTC across networks that support decentralized applications. With a market capitalization of around $7.4 billion, WBTC remains the largest tokenized version of Bitcoin.

BitGo’s switch to Chainlink CCIP aims to improve how WBTC moves between different blockchains. The company said CCIP will become the default cross-chain solution for future assets it issues.

Unlike previous arrangements, BitGo will continue managing important controls directly. These include token contracts, transfer limits and cross-chain configurations.

The company previously used LayerZero after adopting the protocol in 2024 to expand WBTC support on networks such as Avalanche and BNB Chain.

Chainlink CCIP Gains More Cross-Chain Market Share

BitGo’s decision adds another major project to the growing list of platforms moving from LayerZero to Chainlink CCIP.

The total value of announced migrations from LayerZero to Chainlink’s infrastructure has now reached about $14.6 billion. Other projects that have announced similar moves include Mantle, Lombard, Aave and Kraken.

The shift gained attention after a $292 million exploit involving a LayerZero-powered bridge connected to Kelp DAO earlier this year. Several projects later reviewed their cross-chain security setups and announced plans to adopt alternative infrastructure.

Chainlink’s CCIP directory already shows support for WBTC pools on Ethereum and Ronin. However, BitGo and Chainlink have not revealed a timeline for completing the migration across all supported networks.

BitGo Expands Institutional Crypto Services

The WBTC migration comes as BitGo continues building products focused on institutional crypto users.

Recently, the company launched BitGo Link, a treasury management platform designed to help institutions monitor balances and move assets across custody accounts and connected exchanges. The platform uses BitGo’s Policy Engine to support approval processes and permission controls.

BitGo has also introduced security tools focused on reducing future risks for Bitcoin holders. These include features designed to help institutions assess quantum-related risks in multisignature wallets.

The company’s growing infrastructure strategy includes custody, settlement and asset management services. The move to Chainlink CCIP strengthens this approach by giving BitGo more control over WBTC’s cross-chain operations.

BitGo has not announced any changes for existing WBTC holders, and the company has not confirmed whether other assets using LayerZero will also transition to Chainlink in the future.
