Cardano Partners with Draper Dragon to Launch $80M Orion Fund for Institutional DeFi

CARDANO IMAGE AND SOME COINS IN THE BACKGROUND

Cardano has long showcased strong technology but lacked a robust institutional infrastructure. The newly launched Orion Fund aims to change that by combining venture-capital discipline with a global investor network and Silicon Valley support.

Orion Fund Aims to Strengthen Cardano’s Institutional Presence

The Cardano Foundation and Draper Dragon have jointly launched the Draper Dragon Ecosystem Fund, known as the Orion Fund, with a target of $80 million. Draper Dragon will manage the fund, while the Cardano Foundation oversees it without directly making investment decisions. Draper University will also support the fund through founder programs from its Silicon Valley campus.

Investments will be staged over six years, and each stage requires separate community approval. The first vote focuses on the initial, smallest stage, which will determine whether the larger plan proceeds.

Focus on Real-World Assets and Institutional DeFi

The Orion Fund will target Real-World Assets (RWA) and institutional DeFi projects that leverage Cardano’s technical strengths. Using an extended UTXO model similar to Bitcoin, Cardano allows Bitcoin liquidity to connect with smart contracts, enabling advanced financial applications while preserving strong security.

By supporting projects that build on this model, the Orion Fund enables Bitcoin holders to access decentralized financial tools and encourages broader adoption of Cardano’s ecosystem.

Transparency and Community Governance

In line with Cardano’s on-chain governance principles, the fund will provide a public dashboard with real-time performance data. Community roundtables will be held every quarter, and a special-purpose vehicle called Arouet Holdings will manage returns to the Cardano treasury.

Unlike Cardano’s grant program, which provides funds without expecting returns, the Orion Fund focuses on equity investments. Any profits generated will return to the Cardano treasury, creating a long-term financial impact for the network.

Leveraging Draper Dragon’s Institutional Network

The Orion Fund’s strength lies in Draper Dragon’s connections. Founded by Tim Draper, Draper Dragon has a proven track record with early investments in Coinbase, Skype, Baidu, and Hotmail. The firm has also invested in Web3 infrastructure projects such as Ledger, Gemini, EtherFi, Centrifuge, and Coinflow.

This network provides the Orion Fund with the institutional reach needed to elevate Cardano’s Total Value Locked (TVL) to over $3 billion, aiming to increase the network’s on-chain economic activity significantly.
