- Cypherpunk has launched a major Zcash mining operation backed by $33.33 million from Winklevoss Capital.
- The company aims to increase its ZEC holdings and generate additional revenue.
Cypherpunk Technologies is expanding its Zcash strategy with a new mining operation backed by a $33.33 million investment from Winklevoss Capital. The Nasdaq-listed company now has about 4.2 GSol/s of Zcash mining capacity across its U.S. facilities.
The new fleet accounts for roughly 18% of Zcash’s network hashrate. Cypherpunk also appointed mining veteran Kevin Zhang to lead the operation as it looks to increase its ZEC holdings and generate additional cash flow.
Zcash Mining Adds to Cypherpunk’s Treasury Strategy
The mining expansion gives Cypherpunk another way to grow its Zcash treasury. Instead of relying only on market purchases, the company can produce ZEC through its mining operations.
Cypherpunk currently holds 323,394 ZEC, representing about 1.92% of Zcash’s circulating supply. The company has set a longer-term goal of accumulating 5% of Zcash’s total supply.
Mining revenue could also provide additional operational cash flow. Cypherpunk could use those proceeds to fund further ZEC purchases or invest in privacy-focused technologies.
The company estimates that the mining opportunity could generate more than $250 million in annual revenue.
$33 Million Investment Funds Mining Expansion
Winklevoss Capital provided $33.33 million to finance the mining equipment behind the expansion. The investment gives Cypherpunk the resources to establish one of the largest Zcash mining fleets.
The appointment of Kevin Zhang adds mining expertise to the operation. His role will focus on managing the fleet and supporting its growth across Cypherpunk’s U.S. facilities.
The scale of the operation also gives Cypherpunk a larger role in Zcash’s mining ecosystem. Its estimated 18% share of network hashrate makes the company a significant participant in securing the network.
Zcash Faces Security and Investor Concerns
Cypherpunk’s expansion comes after a difficult period for Zcash. Researchers previously uncovered a vulnerability affecting the Orchard system, which triggered a sharp ZEC selloff and put pressure on Cypherpunk’s shares.
Zcash developers responded by patching the issue. The July Ironwood upgrade also introduced additional safeguards designed to strengthen network security.
The mining expansion now comes as Zcash works to improve security, decentralization and investor confidence. For Cypherpunk, the strategy combines ZEC accumulation with mining revenue while maintaining a long-term focus on privacy technology.
If the mining operation reaches its projected scale, it could become an important part of Cypherpunk’s broader Zcash treasury strategy.
