Ethereum Foundation’s $43M ETH Sale to Support Growth
The Ethereum Foundation (EF), the non-profit organization backing Ethereum’s development, has announced plans to sell 10,000 ETH worth approximately $43 million. The move is intended to secure fiat reserves for research, development, and community grants.
Instead of selling all tokens in a single transaction, EF will split the sale across centralized exchanges over several weeks, aiming to minimize market disruption.

This sale comes at a time of internal restructuring within EF, particularly in its Ecosystem Support Program (ESP). Earlier this week, EF paused open grant applications as part of a broader strategy to improve allocation processes. Notably, the foundation distributed $32 million in grants in Q1 2025, supporting education, research, and community initiatives.
Treasury Policy: Structured Spending and Periodic ETH Sales
In June 2025, EF introduced a formal treasury policy that sets financial guidelines for operational expenses and reserves. Under this framework:
- Opex is capped at 15% annually.
- A multi-year reserve buffer ensures financial sustainability.
- Periodic ETH sales occur when fiat reserves move outside target levels.
Since then, EF has conducted multiple sales, including a $25 million transaction with SharpLink Gaming and the sale of 2,795 ETH ($12.7M) across two transactions. EF also has a history of large-scale sales, such as its 100,000 ETH sale in December 2020, which preceded ETH’s then-record rally.
ETH Market Momentum and Institutional Demand
The ETH market is heating up, with Ether trading at $4,326, up 23% in the past month. Alongside EF’s sale, institutional players are making big moves:
- Yunfeng Financial Group recently acquired 10,000 ETH from the open market.
- Ether Machine, preparing for a Nasdaq listing, added 150,000 ETH to its holdings, bringing its total to nearly 495,000 ETH ($2.13B).
Such accumulation suggests that while EF’s sales may introduce short-term volatility, institutional buying pressure is supporting ETH’s price strength.
Could Ethereum Challenge Bitcoin’s Dominance?
The rise in institutional interest has reignited debates about Ethereum’s long-term role in the crypto market. Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin recently stated that Wall Street adoption could help Ethereum overtake Bitcoin as a “monetary base.”
This comes as ETH reached an all-time high of $4,950 in August 2025, coinciding with remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on U.S. monetary policy.
With institutional accumulation and increasing adoption, Ethereum’s path to challenging Bitcoin’s dominance looks stronger than ever, though EF’s periodic sales will remain a balancing factor in the market.
