Ethereum’s Original Vision Returns as Vitalik Buterin Pushes Web3 Sovereignty

  • Vitalik Buterin says Ethereum’s scaling progress has revived its original vision of permissionless, sovereignty-focused applications.
  • He urges Web3 builders to reject centralization as Ethereum becomes cheaper, more scalable, and increasingly adopted.

Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin believes the network is finally realigning with the principles that inspired its creation more than a decade ago. As Ethereum scales and transaction costs fall, Buterin argues that Web3 builders now have both the tools and responsibility to prioritize sovereignty over convenience and centralization.

In a recent post on X dated January 14, Vitalik Buterin reminded the crypto community that Ethereum’s 2014 vision centered on secure, permissionless, and decentralized applications. According to him, that vision has steadily taken shape over the past five years, driven by major network upgrades such as the Merge and Fusaka.

Ethereum’s technical progress, he noted, has removed many of the earlier limitations that developers used as justification for centralized design choices. Lower fees, improved scalability, and maintained security have reshaped what is possible on the network today.

Why Sovereignty Matters More Than Ever

Buterin urged Web3 developers to build applications that reinforce user sovereignty rather than relying on permissioned systems. He emphasized that Ethereum has become cheaper and more scalable, leaving little excuse for applications that fail to empower users.

Central to his argument is the concept of the “walkaway test.” This idea measures whether users can retain access to their data and assets even if the original application or company disappears. Applications that pass this test are fully permissionless and resistant to centralized control.

“The infrastructure is ready,” Buterin stated, highlighting how ZK-EVMs and PeerDAS are effectively delivering Ethereum’s long-discussed sharding vision. Layer-2 solutions, he added, further enhance speed and efficiency without compromising decentralization.

Examples of the Vision in Practice

Buterin pointed to platforms such as Fileverse as proof that sovereignty-focused applications are achievable. Built on Ethereum and the Gnosis chain, Fileverse offers decentralized messaging and file storage while allowing users to maintain control over their data.

Such platforms demonstrate that Web3 does not need to sacrifice decentralization to achieve usability. Instead, they show how Ethereum’s evolving architecture can support applications aligned with its founding ideals.

Why This Push Is Happening Now

The renewed emphasis on sovereignty comes amid growing global crypto regulation. Many Web3 protocols have leaned heavily into compliance, often resulting in permissioned systems that mirror traditional finance. Buterin has criticized this shift, arguing it strays from Ethereum’s core mission.

His stance aligns with the Trustless Manifesto, which he signed in 2025, reinforcing that Ethereum was designed to promote individual freedom rather than optimize financial efficiency or convenience.

What Lies Ahead for Ethereum

Discussions within the Ethereum community are now focusing on proposals like ERC-8092, aimed at enhancing individual sovereignty. At the same time, onchain data from Santiment shows Ethereum wallet creation reaching new highs.

With rising demand for permissionless systems and increasing network activity, institutions are also taking notice. Standard Chartered recently projected Ether could outperform Bitcoin in 2026, setting a year-end target of $7,500.
