How to Cancel or Modify Pending Ethereum Transactions Quickly

  • Ethereum users can cancel or speed up a pending transaction by creating a new one with the same nonce and a higher gas fee, effectively replacing the original before it’s confirmed.
  • Wallets like MetaMask simplify this process with built-in “Cancel” and “Speed Up” options, giving users more control over their transactions.

Blockchain technology is designed to be secure and immutable—but that doesn’t mean you’re entirely powerless when it comes to Ethereum transactions. If your transaction is stuck in limbo, there’s still a way to fix it—provided it hasn’t yet been confirmed on the blockchain. Whether you’re using MetaMask or another crypto wallet, knowing how to cancel or modify a pending Ethereum transaction can save you both time and frustration.

Why Ethereum Transactions Get Stuck

Ethereum transactions enter a temporary zone called the mempool (or txpool) before they’re confirmed. During this stage, validators prioritize transactions based on gas fees. If your transaction has a low fee, it may remain pending while others with higher fees get processed first.

Common reasons for stuck transactions include:

  • Low gas fees that validators ignore in favor of higher-paying ones
  • Network congestion during peak usage times
  • Nonce gaps, where one pending transaction holds up all subsequent ones due to Ethereum’s strict transaction ordering system

How to Cancel an Ethereum Transaction

If your transaction is still pending, here’s how to cancel it using a wallet like MetaMask:

  1. Check the status on Etherscan.io. If it’s marked as “Success,” it’s too late to reverse.
  2. If it says “Pending,” note the nonce number of the transaction.
  3. In your wallet, create a new transaction to your own address with a value of 0 ETH.
  4. Manually enter the same nonce as the pending transaction.
  5. Increase the gas fee—at least 30% higher than the original.
  6. Send the new transaction.

Since two transactions can’t share the same nonce, the one with the higher fee will overwrite the original, effectively canceling it.

Speeding Up Instead of Canceling

Don’t want to cancel but just want it to go through faster? Simply use the same steps but input the correct transaction details (recipient address and ETH amount) while increasing the gas fee. Many wallets, including MetaMask, simplify this with a “Speed Up” button.

Being able to cancel or modify a transaction on Ethereum is a powerful feature—one not available on many other blockchains. Tools like MetaMask have made it user-friendly, but understanding how nonce and gas fees work is essential. So next time your ETH transfer stalls, don’t panic—just replace it.
