  • IOTA Identity 1.7 Beta introduces hybrid post-quantum signatures and on-chain verification, securing digital credentials against future quantum threats.
  • It allows public verification while keeping personal data private, supporting long-term trust and transparency.

IOTA has released Identity 1.7 Beta, a major upgrade that strengthens digital identity security and prepares organizations for future quantum computing threats. This update introduces hybrid post-quantum signatures and ML-DSA support, ensuring that digital credentials remain secure for decades.

Hybrid Post-Quantum Signatures Protect Against Quantum Threats

IOTA Identity 1.7 uses a hybrid cryptographic approach, combining traditional algorithms with ML-DSA signatures. Endorsed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), ML-DSA resists attacks from quantum computers that could break existing public-key systems.

This hybrid method allows organizations to adopt quantum-safe security without replacing their current infrastructure. By maintaining backward compatibility, IOTA ensures a smooth transition to post-quantum security while keeping existing verification tools functional.

The IOTA Identity 1.7 Beta update ensures secrets secured today stay safe even in a post-quantum future.

On-Chain Verifiable Credentials Enable Transparency

The update also enables organizations to publish Verifiable Credentials on-chain. Previously, credentials were exchanged privately, limiting public validation. Now, credentials can be issued directly to a public IOTA address, making them instantly discoverable and verifiable through a DID Document.

On-chain verification improves trust in industries like supply chain management, trade, and certification, where public validation of credentials is critical. At the same time, sensitive personal data remains off-chain to comply with GDPR and other privacy regulations.

Future-Proofing Digital Identity with IOTA

The post-quantum features in IOTA Identity 1.7 are released as experimental tools for developers to test and evaluate quantum-safe security. Hybrid signatures work seamlessly with existing systems, reducing implementation barriers while preparing for long-term security needs.

IOTA Co-founder Dominik Schiener highlighted that this upgrade responds to requests from enterprises and governments seeking quantum-safe credentials for large-scale deployments. With this release, on-chain verifiable credentials are now fully post-quantum secure, laying the groundwork for decades of reliable digital identity management.

This upgrade positions IOTA Identity 1.7 Beta as a leading solution for decentralized, secure, and future-ready digital identity. By combining quantum-resistant cryptography with transparent on-chain verification, organizations can protect data today and stay ahead of tomorrow’s technological challenges.
