Vitalik Buterin Says Hegotá Could Be Ethereum’s Final “Normal” Fork

  • Vitalik Buterin says Hegotá could be Ethereum’s final “normal” fork.
  • The upgrade could usher in more offchain computation verified by cryptographic proofs.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has suggested that the Hegotá upgrade, planned for 2027, could be the network’s final “normal” fork.

Buterin sees Hegotá as a turning point for Ethereum. After the upgrade, the blockchain could move toward a model that relies more heavily on cryptographic proofs to verify computation performed outside the network.

The shift would take Ethereum beyond its traditional role as a blockchain that executes transactions and toward what Buterin calls a “cryptographic world computer.”

Hegotá Could Mark a Major Change for Ethereum

According to Buterin, Hegotá may be the last Ethereum upgrade that looks familiar to developers who understand the network as it existed around 2015.

Ethereum has largely evolved through a series of upgrades that introduced new features while maintaining the basic structure developers were familiar with. The future roadmap could look very different.

Buterin has pointed to technologies such as recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, improved consensus systems and quantum-resistant cryptography as part of Ethereum’s longer-term development.

These technologies could allow the network to verify complex results without requiring every node to perform the same computation.

Ethereum Could Rely More on Offchain Computation

The proposed shift would change how Ethereum handles computation. Instead of requiring the blockchain to execute every process directly, some computation could take place offchain. Cryptographic proofs could then be submitted to Ethereum to demonstrate that the results are correct.

The base layer would continue to handle settlement, transaction finality and shared state. However, it could spend less effort executing every individual computation.

For developers, this could open the door to applications that combine offchain processing with onchain security. The approach could also reduce the workload placed on individual nodes while preserving a way to verify the final results.

PeerDAS Is an Early Step

Buterin linked this broader transition to earlier Ethereum scaling work, including PeerDAS. PeerDAS allows nodes to check whether data is available by sampling parts of it rather than downloading the entire dataset. This changes how Ethereum approaches data verification.

The technology is part of a wider effort to make the network more scalable without requiring every node to handle the full burden of processing and storing all available information. Buterin views this type of development as an early sign of Ethereum moving beyond the traditional blockchain model.

What Should Ethereum Keep Onchain?

The move toward offchain computation also raises questions about transparency and decentralization.

Ethereum researcher Barnabé Monnot has argued that important information used by applications should remain directly available onchain. While proofs can show that an offchain computation was performed correctly, users may still need access to the underlying information.

Keeping important records on Ethereum can allow users to interact with applications without depending entirely on external servers or intermediaries.

Proof-Based Systems Could Expand DeFi

Supporters of proof-based architectures see potential applications across decentralized finance. Complex processes such as collateral analysis, liquidation routing and matching borrowers with lenders could potentially happen outside smart contracts. Ethereum could then verify the resulting computation before settling it onchain.

This could allow developers to create more sophisticated financial applications without forcing the blockchain to execute every step itself. However, the model could also create new challenges around data availability, infrastructure and user experience.

Demand Remains an Open Question

Not everyone is convinced that greater reliance on cryptographic proofs will translate into widespread adoption.

Some critics question whether users and financial institutions have enough demand for systems that provide continuous mathematical verification. Traditional financial services often rely on regulation, legal agreements and established institutions to provide trust.

That does not undermine the technical capabilities of cryptographic proofs. Instead, it raises a separate question about whether the benefits will be compelling enough for users and businesses to change how they operate.

Ethereum’s Next Phase

Hegotá could therefore represent more than another Ethereum upgrade.

If Buterin’s vision develops as outlined, Ethereum could gradually become a platform where the base layer verifies increasingly complex computations performed elsewhere. The network would still provide settlement and shared state, but cryptographic proofs would take on a larger role in establishing correctness.

The main challenge will be finding the right balance between scalability and accessibility.

As Ethereum moves toward 2027, developers will have to determine which information must remain directly onchain and which workloads can safely move elsewhere. How that balance is ultimately designed could shape Ethereum’s next phase of development.
