  • Michael Saylor opposes BIP-110, saying Bitcoin should remain open to different uses.
  • The proposal has sparked debate over restricting non-financial data on the network.

Strategy co-founder Michael Saylor has rejected efforts to limit non-financial data on the Bitcoin network, saying such restrictions go against Bitcoin’s core values. His comments come as the community debates whether Bitcoin should only support financial transactions or allow broader uses.

Saylor Criticizes Bitcoin Data Restrictions

In a July 21 post on X, Saylor argued that changing Bitcoin’s rules because some users dislike certain network activities goes against the principles behind Bitcoin.

He said attempts to enforce limits on how people use the network conflict with ideas such as freedom, property rights, free markets, and individual choice.

Saylor also described BIP-110 as an attempt to impose “monetary purity” through rules rather than allowing the Bitcoin community to decide through open participation.

What Is BIP-110 and Why Is It Controversial?

BIP-110 is a proposal that aims to restrict non-financial data usage on the Bitcoin blockchain. The proposal has created debate among Bitcoin users, developers, and investors.

The discussion mainly focuses on whether Bitcoin should remain strictly a monetary network or support additional applications that involve storing data.

One major point of debate involves Ordinals, a method that allows users to add extra data to Bitcoin transactions. While some users see this as an expansion of Bitcoin’s capabilities, others believe it creates unnecessary demand for block space.

Bitcoin Community Divided Over Network Usage

Supporters of BIP-110 argue that Bitcoin’s primary purpose is to provide a decentralized financial system. They believe limiting non-financial data could help protect network efficiency and keep Bitcoin focused on payments.

Opponents, including Saylor, argue that Bitcoin’s permissionless design means users should be free to decide how they use the network. They believe restricting certain activities could weaken the open nature that makes Bitcoin valuable.

Saylor Defends Bitcoin’s Open Network Approach

Saylor’s comments highlight a wider debate about Bitcoin’s future direction. The discussion centers on whether the network should have stricter limits or continue allowing different types of innovation.

As BIP-110 gains attention, Bitcoin users will continue weighing the balance between preserving Bitcoin’s original purpose and maintaining its permissionless structure.
