Chainlink Expands Into Central Bank Digital Currency Projects Across Five Countries

  • Chainlink is powering CBDC and tokenized asset pilots across five countries using its CCIP technology.
  • Its growing role could support wider blockchain adoption if these projects move beyond the testing stage.

Chainlink is becoming a key part of several central bank digital currency (CBDC) projects as governments explore blockchain-based payment systems. Its Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) is now being tested in projects spanning Brazil, Hong Kong, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the multi-country mBridge initiative.

These developments highlight Chainlink’s growing role in helping different blockchain networks exchange data and settle transactions securely.

Chainlink Powers Cross-Border CBDC Trials

Brazil’s Drex CBDC project is among the most notable examples. Through a collaboration with Banco Inter, Chainlink supported a pilot that connected Brazil’s Drex platform with Hong Kong. The test automated payments for tokenized assets, showing how international trade settlements could happen more efficiently using blockchain technology.

In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority integrated Chainlink’s CCIP into its e-HKD project. The pilot demonstrated a Payment-versus-Payment settlement between ANZ’s A$DC stablecoin and Hong Kong’s digital currency across separate blockchain networks.

The successful test showed that digital assets issued on different ledgers can exchange value securely without relying on a centralized intermediary.

Australia and the UK Expand Chainlink Adoption

Australia’s involvement comes through ANZ, which has continued testing blockchain-based financial services. The bank has used Chainlink’s infrastructure to settle tokenized assets across public blockchain networks, supporting broader adoption of digital finance.

The United Kingdom also joined the list in February 2026. The Bank of England selected Chainlink for its Synchronisation Lab, where researchers are exploring atomic settlement for tokenized securities. The project focuses on making financial transactions faster while reducing settlement risks.

CCIP Solves Blockchain Interoperability Challenges

One of Chainlink’s biggest strengths is its Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol. Rather than operating on a single blockchain, CCIP allows different blockchain networks to communicate securely.

Beyond transferring value, the protocol also supports secure data sharing, compliance checks, Delivery-versus-Payment settlements, and Payment-versus-Payment transactions. These capabilities are becoming increasingly important as governments and financial institutions build digital asset infrastructure.

Chainlink also plays a role in addressing interoperability challenges within the mBridge initiative, which brings together monetary authorities from China, Hong Kong, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates. The platform aims to improve cross-border payments using multiple CBDCs.

What It Could Mean for LINK

The expansion of Chainlink into central bank projects strengthens its position in both decentralized finance and traditional financial markets. Successful pilot programs, including the Brazil-Hong Kong trade settlement completed in late 2025, suggest the technology is progressing beyond early testing.

However, many of these initiatives remain pilot projects. Central bank digital currency programs often require years of regulatory approvals, infrastructure development, and political support before reaching full-scale deployment.

If more pilots move into live production, Chainlink could see wider adoption as financial institutions look for reliable cross-chain infrastructure. Until then, investors will be watching closely to see which projects become permanent parts of the global financial system.
