  • XRP Ledger validators will vote on a major upgrade that introduces batch transactions, confidential transfers, and other new features.
  • The proposal also improves network performance as validators continue debating XRPL reserve requirements.

The XRP Ledger could be on the verge of one of its biggest protocol upgrades in recent years. Validators are expected to begin voting within the next two weeks on a package of amendments designed to improve network functionality, privacy, and overall performance.

If approved, the changes would introduce several new features while making the network more efficient and reliable for developers and users.

XRP Ledger Validators Prepare for Major Upgrade Vote

According to XRPL validator Vet, the proposed upgrade includes a wide range of improvements that have been under development for some time. The amendments are expected to enter the validator voting process in about two weeks if everything stays on schedule.

The package combines new capabilities with important infrastructure improvements. It also adds performance optimizations that reduce the workload on network nodes and improve reliability across the XRP Ledger.

Developers delayed the update while they focused on security initiatives. They have now completed that work and resumed development on the long-awaited features.

New Features Could Improve XRPL Functionality

One of the biggest additions is Batch Transactions, which allows several transactions to be grouped and processed together. This could improve efficiency for applications that handle large numbers of transfers.

Another major feature is Confidential Transfers. This amendment would hide transaction amounts while preserving the integrity and security of the ledger, adding an extra layer of privacy for users.

The proposal also introduces Sponsored Fees and Reserves (XLS-68). This feature would allow third parties to pay transaction fees and account reserve requirements on behalf of other users, making it easier for new participants to use the network.

In addition, Permission Delegation would let account owners grant limited permissions without giving full control of their wallets. The upgrade also enhances the XRP Ledger’s Multi-Purpose Token (MPT) standard through dynamic MPT improvements.

Reserve Requirement Debate Continues

While attention remains focused on the upcoming vote, another discussion has emerged within the XRPL community over account reserve requirements.

Vet believes the current reserve should not be reduced further. He argued that storage and memory remain valuable network resources and that reserve requirements continue to protect the network from spam and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

The XRP Ledger has gradually lowered reserve requirements over the years. Creating an account once required 1,000 XRP before the requirement dropped to 200 XRP in 2013. Today, users only need a 1 XRP base reserve to activate an account.

Many validators supported previous reserve reductions, but some now believe the current level provides the best balance between accessibility and network security.

What Happens Next?

The validator vote will determine whether these amendments become part of the XRP Ledger. If approved, the upgrade could introduce new tools for developers, improve transaction efficiency, strengthen privacy, and expand the network’s capabilities.

With voting expected to begin in the coming weeks, the proposed changes could mark another important step in the continued development of the XRP Ledger.
