  • The partnership will integrate Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin, XRPL, and payments network to improve cross-border transactions.

Flutterwave has secured a strategic investment from Ripple, valuing the African fintech company at $3.2 billion. The partnership will integrate Ripple’s blockchain and stablecoin infrastructure to improve cross-border payments across Africa.

Ripple Backs Flutterwave’s Growth Strategy

Flutterwave announced that Ripple has joined its Series E funding round through a strategic investment. While the companies did not reveal the size of the investment or Ripple’s stake, the deal values Flutterwave at $3.2 billion.

The investment marks another major milestone for Flutterwave, which has become one of Africa’s leading financial technology firms. The company operates in 35 African countries and continues to expand its payment infrastructure across the continent.

Flutterwave has already raised more than $500 million in funding and processed over one billion transactions worth more than $50 billion.

Flutterwave to Integrate RLUSD and XRPL

A key part of the partnership involves integrating Ripple’s technology into Flutterwave’s payment ecosystem.

Flutterwave plans to add Ripple’s USD-backed stablecoin RLUSD, Ripple Payments, and the XRP Ledger (XRPL) to its payment stack. The company said this move will support a “stablecoin-first” payment architecture.

RLUSD will be embedded into Flutterwave’s payment rails and its Send App remittance corridors. The stablecoin will serve as a settlement asset for high-volume payment channels, potentially improving transaction efficiency.

The two companies also plan to launch a unified API that connects Flutterwave’s domestic payment network with Ripple’s global payments infrastructure.

Lower Costs and Faster Cross-Border Payments

Cross-border payments in Africa have long faced challenges such as high foreign exchange costs and lengthy settlement times.

Flutterwave believes integrating Ripple’s blockchain technology with existing fiat payment methods can help address these issues. The partnership aims to reduce payment delays and lower transaction costs for businesses and consumers.

Flutterwave founder and CEO Olugbenga “GB” Agboola described the investment as a major step forward for the company’s long-term vision.

According to Agboola, the partnership will help scale Flutterwave’s infrastructure and expand its stablecoin-enabled payment services across Africa.

He added that faster settlement and cheaper cross-border payments could create a “payment superhighway” connecting African commerce directly to the global economy.

Flutterwave Expands Beyond Payments

Flutterwave has steadily expanded its services beyond traditional payments. Last year, the company launched stablecoin-based payment services that allow users to transact and hold dollar-pegged digital assets.

In April, Flutterwave secured a banking licence in Nigeria, enabling it to operate as a microlender. Earlier this year, the company also acquired Mono, an African open banking and financial data infrastructure provider.

The partnership with Ripple highlights Flutterwave’s growing focus on digital assets and blockchain technology. As stablecoins gain wider adoption globally, the collaboration could position Flutterwave as a key player in Africa’s evolving digital finance sector.
