Ripple RLUSD Enters Japan After Regulatory Approval, Expanding Its Reach in Asia

  • Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin is now approved for use in Japan through SBI VC Trade.
  • The move expands Ripple’s reach in Asia’s regulated crypto market.

Ripple has achieved a major milestone after its RLUSD stablecoin received regulatory approval in Japan. The move allows the dollar-backed stablecoin to enter one of the world’s most tightly regulated crypto markets, strengthening Ripple’s push into the growing regulated stablecoin sector.

Japan Approves RLUSD Under Strict Stablecoin Rules

Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) has approved RLUSD as an electronic payment instrument under the country’s Payment Services Act. The approval places RLUSD in a category designed specifically for foreign-issued stablecoins that meet Japan’s regulatory requirements.

The decision allows RLUSD to be offered through SBI VC Trade, the digital asset platform operated by Japanese financial giant SBI Group. Both institutional investors and retail users in Japan will now have access to the stablecoin through the VCTRADE platform.

Japan is known for maintaining some of the strictest regulations for stablecoins globally. As a result, obtaining approval for both institutional and retail use represents a significant achievement for Ripple and highlights growing acceptance of regulated digital assets.

Ripple Strengthens Partnership With SBI

The launch of RLUSD in Japan builds on a long-standing relationship between Ripple and SBI. The two companies first began working together in 2016 on blockchain infrastructure and cross-border payment solutions across Asia.

The latest development also fulfills a memorandum of understanding signed between Ripple and SBI in August 2025. Through the partnership, Ripple aims to expand access to dollar-based liquidity while supporting the growing demand for blockchain-powered financial services.

According to Ripple, RLUSD is designed to support payments, tokenization, and collateral management. The company believes the stablecoin can help connect Japanese businesses to global financial networks while improving efficiency in cross-border transactions.

RLUSD Faces Strong Competition From Industry Leaders

Despite the regulatory victory, RLUSD remains a relatively small player in the stablecoin market. Ripple reports that the stablecoin has reached a market capitalization of approximately $1.7 billion since its launch in late 2024.

That figure is significantly lower than the market values of leading stablecoins. Tether’s USDT controls roughly $186 billion, while Circle’s USDC holds around $74 billion, giving both competitors a substantial lead in liquidity and adoption.

Ripple positions RLUSD as a regulated, enterprise-focused stablecoin that operates separately from XRP. The company uses the token to support institutional settlements and real-world asset tokenization, two sectors that could see wider adoption as regulators introduce clearer frameworks worldwide.

Can RLUSD Gain Ground in the Global Stablecoin Market?

The approval in Japan gives RLUSD an important regulatory credential as competition in the stablecoin sector intensifies. Governments across the United States, Europe, and Asia are introducing clearer rules for digital dollar tokens, making compliance an increasingly important factor for growth.

While regulatory approval strengthens RLUSD’s position, Ripple still faces the challenge of converting that advantage into higher trading volume, deeper liquidity, and broader adoption. Whether RLUSD can significantly reduce the gap between itself and dominant stablecoins such as USDT and USDC remains one of the key questions for the market in the years ahead.
