Spot Solana ETPs Explained, A Simple Guide for New Crypto Investors

  • Spot Solana ETP offers investors an easy way to track Solana’s price without managing crypto wallets.
  • However, it limits on-chain access and brings trading restrictions and tracking risks.

Investors have shown strong interest in Solana after its impressive rise from the 2022 bear market low to its all-time high in January 2025. With crypto adoption growing, a new product now offers an easier path for traditional investors to gain exposure to Solana’s price: the spot Solana exchange-traded product (ETP).

What Is Solana?

Solana is a high-performance blockchain launched in 2020 by Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal. It supports smart contracts, NFTs, DeFi applications, and remains among the most actively used blockchain networks. Its standout feature is speed, processing up to 60,000 transactions per second, far ahead of Bitcoin and Ethereum. Low transaction fees and strong developer activity have made it a top ecosystem for memecoins, NFT platforms, and decentralized exchanges.

However, Solana has faced criticism for network outages and concerns about centralization. Although reliability has improved since its earlier issues, new blockchains competing on speed and efficiency continue to challenge its position.

What Is a Spot Solana ETP?

A spot Solana ETP tracks the real-time price of SOL by holding actual Solana tokens. It trades on traditional brokerage platforms in the same way as a stock, making Solana exposure accessible for users who may find crypto wallets and security practices complex.
However, buying the ETP does not grant ownership of actual SOL. Instead, investors own a product designed to follow its price.

Staking Within Solana ETPs

Some Solana ETP issuers stake a portion of the underlying SOL. Staking rewards generated are reinvested into the fund, raising the investor’s net asset value (NAV). For example, $100 of a Solana ETP with $5 in staking rewards becomes $105 in value.
Investors should note that providers typically deduct staking fees before rewards are distributed.

Pros and Cons of Spot Solana ETPs

A Solana ETP offers convenience, familiar brokerage access, and simplified custody—ideal for those hesitant about handling crypto directly.
But the trade-offs matter:

  • You cannot use SOL for on-chain activities
  • Trading is limited to market hours
  • Tracking may be imperfect due to fees and internal adjustments

As always, crypto remains highly volatile, and regulatory uncertainty persists across the sector. Investors should understand these risks before choosing an ETP over buying SOL directly.
