- Standard Chartered has launched institutional spot trading for Bitcoin and Ether in the UAE, expanding its regulated crypto services.
- The move strengthens institutional access to crypto and highlights the UAE’s growing role in digital asset adoption.
Standard Chartered has made a major expansion into crypto trading by launching institutional spot trading for Bitcoin and Ether in the United Arab Emirates. The move gives eligible institutional clients direct access to BTC and ETH through the bank’s existing electronic trading infrastructure.
The launch adds trading to Standard Chartered’s growing digital asset business in the UAE. It also marks another important step in the adoption of crypto by major global financial institutions.
Standard Chartered Brings Spot Crypto Trading to UAE
Standard Chartered said institutional clients in the UAE can now trade deliverable Bitcoin and Ether through its electronic trading channels.
The service operates through Standard Chartered DIFC, which is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA). This allows eligible clients to trade crypto within a regulated financial environment.
The offering focuses on spot trading. Clients can therefore buy or sell Bitcoin and Ether for delivery rather than trading crypto derivatives.
This gives institutional investors another way to gain direct exposure to BTC and ETH through established banking infrastructure.
A Major Step for Institutional Crypto Adoption
Standard Chartered’s move is significant because the bank is a Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB). These institutions are among the most important banks in the global financial system.
The bank says it is the first G-SIB to offer institutional spot crypto trading in the UAE. Its entry could therefore encourage more traditional financial institutions to expand their digital asset services in the region.
For institutional investors, trading through a major bank can also simplify access to the crypto market. Clients can use familiar banking systems instead of depending entirely on specialist crypto exchanges.
Standard Chartered Already Offers Crypto Custody in the UAE
The new trading service builds on Standard Chartered’s existing digital asset operations in the UAE.
The bank launched its DFSA-regulated digital asset custody service in the country in 2024. The service initially supported Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Adding spot trading gives Standard Chartered a broader digital asset offering for institutional clients. They can now access crypto trading while retaining flexibility over where their assets are held.
Clients can settle trades with a custodian of their choice, including Standard Chartered’s own digital asset custody service. This gives institutions more flexibility when managing their crypto holdings.
Standard Chartered Expands Its Global Crypto Strategy
The UAE launch follows Standard Chartered’s expansion into institutional crypto trading in other markets.
The bank began offering deliverable Bitcoin and Ether spot trading to institutional clients through its UK branch in 2025. That service targeted clients such as asset managers, corporates and professional investors.
Standard Chartered has also connected its crypto trading service with its existing electronic foreign exchange infrastructure. Clients can access the service through platforms such as Standard Chartered Markets and FIX API. The UAE launch therefore represents an expansion of a broader digital asset strategy rather than a standalone move.
Why the UAE Matters for Crypto
The UAE has emerged as an important hub for digital asset activity, with Dubai building a regulatory framework for crypto businesses and financial services.
The regulatory environment has helped attract crypto firms, financial institutions and professional investors seeking clearer rules around digital assets.
Standard Chartered’s latest expansion adds another major global bank to this growing market. Its decision to launch institutional Bitcoin and Ether trading in the UAE also highlights the increasing role of traditional banks in the region’s crypto sector.
The move could further strengthen the UAE’s position as a destination for institutional crypto activity. As more established financial institutions introduce regulated trading and custody services, professional investors may find it easier to access digital assets through traditional financial channels.
Bitcoin and Ether Gain More Institutional Access
Standard Chartered’s UAE expansion highlights the growing connection between traditional banking and the crypto market.
Bitcoin and Ether are gaining wider access to regulated financial services as major banks expand into crypto trading and custody. This gives institutional investors more ways to enter the market through established financial institutions.
Standard Chartered’s latest launch adds another regulated route for institutions looking to trade Bitcoin and Ether. The bank’s existing custody services also provide a broader infrastructure for clients seeking exposure to digital assets.
The expansion is another sign that crypto is moving deeper into mainstream finance. As more major banks offer regulated trading and custody, institutional access to Bitcoin and Ether is likely to become easier and more familiar.
