Strengthening Security: Pi Network’s Shift to Email-Based 2FA and Account Verification

  • Pi Network is transitioning from phone number-based verification to email-based two-factor authentication (2FA) to enhance security and reliability, addressing challenges related to SMS verification.
  • After a temporary pause to ensure account integrity, migrations have now resumed, with plans to gradually expand as more users complete the email-based 2FA process.

The Pi Network, a growing cryptocurrency platform, recently announced a major update regarding its mainnet migration and account verification process. Historically, the platform relied on phone numbers as unique identifiers for accounts. However, this method has proven challenging due to various limitations, prompting a significant shift to email-based two-factor authentication (2FA).

Challenges of Phone Number-Based Verification

Using phone numbers for account verification initially seemed convenient but soon revealed several drawbacks. Global telecommunication regulations, carrier policies, individual service subscriptions, and SMS costs made SMS verification unreliable and inconsistent. As a result, many Pi Network users faced difficulties completing account verification, which hindered the platform’s overall security and reliability.

A New Era of Enhanced Security with Email-Based 2FA

To address these challenges, Pi Network is transitioning from phone number-based verification to email-based 2FA. This new approach enhances security by leveraging the two-factor aspect, which provides a more reliable and cost-effective way to authenticate accounts. The long-term goal is to implement advanced authentication methods, such as passkeys and biometrics.

However, the transition requires users to establish a trusted email on their accounts. This step has presented complications, as some users never added an email, entered incorrect ones, or shared emails with family members’ Pi accounts. Given the significance of this change, Pi Network conducted extensive analytics to ensure the integrity and security of the migration process.

Temporary Pause and Gradual Resumption of Migrations

Due to the complexities involved, the migration process was temporarily paused. The pause allowed the Pi Network team to analyze how users added and verified their trusted emails, completed the 2FA process, and ensured account security. In some cases, additional measures, such as liveness checks or SMS verification, were required to confirm user identities.

The good news is that migrations have now resumed and will continue to expand gradually. Pi Network is committed to a seamless and secure transition, prioritizing the safety of user accounts. This migration marks a critical step towards improved security and reliability, ensuring users can confidently engage with the network.

A Secure Future for the Pi Community

This update reflects Pi Network’s dedication to robust security measures. As the platform continues to grow, the adoption of email-based 2FA and the eventual integration of advanced authentication methods will fortify user accounts against threats. Users are encouraged to complete the email verification process promptly to secure their accounts and participate in the network’s future innovations.

With these measures in place, Pi Network is poised for a secure and scalable future, reinforcing trust within its ever-expanding community.
