- Tether has invested $150 million in Gold.com to expand access to its gold-backed cryptocurrency, Tether Gold (XAUt).
- The move aims to make gold more accessible and explore stablecoin payments for physical gold.
Tether, the issuer of the popular stablecoin USDt, has made a bold move into the gold market, acquiring a $150 million stake in the precious metals platform Gold.com. The investment, representing roughly 12% of Gold.com, aims to expand access to Tether Gold (XAUt), Tether’s gold-backed cryptocurrency, by integrating it into Gold.com’s platform.
Gold.com is a publicly listed online marketplace that sells gold, silver, and platinum to multiple markets, including the United States. This partnership reflects a growing trend in bridging traditional assets like gold with digital finance.
Gold as a Hedge in Unstable Times
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized that this investment is not a short-term trade but a strategic hedge. “Gold has played a central role in preserving value for centuries, particularly during periods of monetary stress and geopolitical uncertainty,” Ardoino said. He highlighted that the move demonstrates Tether’s commitment to making gold as accessible, transferable, and usable as modern digital money, while maintaining its physical backing.
The investment comes at a time when gold has seen strong growth, rallying more than 80% over the past year to $5,600 before cooling to $4,800. With economic uncertainties and inflation concerns still looming, gold continues to attract both traditional and digital investors seeking stability.
Exploring Stablecoin Payments for Physical Gold
Beyond tokenized gold, Tether and Gold.com are exploring the possibility of allowing customers to purchase physical gold using USDt and Tether’s recently launched US market-focused stablecoin, USAt (USAT). This aligns with Tether’s broader strategy to expand stablecoin usage beyond digital trading into real-world, tangible assets.
Earlier the same day, Tether also announced a $100 million investment in Anchorage Digital, a crypto-native bank. This move supports the adoption of USAt in the U.S., with Anchorage preparing to go public next year.
Tether’s recent initiatives come on the back of a highly profitable 2025, reporting a $10 billion profit largely earned through interest on U.S. Treasury holdings backing its $185.6 billion USDt reserve. The Gold.com investment represents a significant step in blending traditional wealth preservation strategies with innovative blockchain solutions.
By integrating gold-backed stablecoins and exploring physical gold payments, Tether is positioning itself at the forefront of digital finance while hedging against global financial instability.
