Why XRP (Ripple) Is Sinking Today Despite Fed Rate Cut

  • XRP fell nearly 4.4% as investors reacted to the Federal Reserve’s outlook of fewer future rate cuts and excess leverage being unwound.
  • While short-term volatility remains, regulatory changes supporting crypto ETFs offer a positive signal for the broader market.

XRP has come under pressure once again, dropping nearly 4.4% as investors reassess the Federal Reserve’s latest monetary policy stance and the broader crypto market responds to excess leverage being flushed out.

Fed’s Rate Cut Sparks Mixed Reactions for XRP

Last week, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates for the first time since December, an event that is usually considered bullish for cryptocurrencies. Initially, optimism ran high as traders anticipated easier financial conditions could drive more capital into risk assets like crypto.

However, the Fed’s dot plot — a chart showing officials’ expectations for future interest rates — dampened enthusiasm. Instead of projecting steady easing, policymakers suggested fewer rate cuts in 2026 than investors had hoped for. This shift introduced uncertainty, cooling some of the excitement that had fueled speculative trading.

Excess Leverage Adds to the Decline

According to Adam Morgan McCarthy, head of research at crypto analytics firm Kaiko, the downturn was amplified by high leverage in the market. After the Fed’s announcement, funding rates climbed as traders placed speculative bets on a continued rally. When XRP began to slip, those leveraged positions were liquidated, creating a cascading sell-off that dragged the token down further.

Such chain reactions are not unusual in crypto markets. Large sales often trigger additional sell-offs, much like the flash crash observed last month. This interconnectedness highlights the fragile balance between optimism and panic in the digital asset space.

A Glimmer of Good News for Crypto

Despite the short-term pressure, the long-term outlook for crypto gained a boost when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) voted to streamline approvals for spot-crypto ETFs. This regulatory change could pave the way for more crypto ETFs to launch in the U.S., potentially broadening investor access and strengthening the market’s foundation.

The Bottom Line on XRP

XRP remains one of the most closely watched cryptocurrencies, given its potential to reshape cross-border payments. However, it continues to face volatility and stiff competition in the crypto landscape. For investors, XRP might best be approached as a speculative asset — one with opportunities but also significant risks in the near term.
