XRP has achieved a historic milestone on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), becoming the fastest contract ever to reach over $1 billion in open interest (OI). This surge, achieved just three months after its May 2025 launch, has renewed excitement and speculation around a potential spot XRP ETF.

Record-Breaking Futures Growth Signals Market Maturity
CME confirmed the milestone on August 26, noting that the growth reflects an influx of new capital and increasing maturity in crypto derivatives markets. XRP futures, alongside SOL and ETH options, surpassed $1 billion in OI, with XRP reaching the mark the quickest in CME history.

Nate Geraci, president of the ETF Store, emphasized the underestimated demand for spot XRP ETFs. “CME reports that XRP futures have reached over $1 billion in open interest. There is already over $800 million in futures-based XRP ETFs, showing significant investor appetite for spot products,” he noted. Prediction markets currently assign an 82% chance of a Ripple ETF being approved by year-end 2025.
XRP Retail Enthusiasm vs Institutional Skepticism
Despite the impressive futures growth, XRP’s long-term utility remains debated. With a market capitalization of roughly $178 billion, XRP is the world’s third-largest cryptocurrency, surpassing even major asset managers like BlackRock. Yet, the coin faces criticism from institutional investors, while retail holders remain highly supportive.
Pro-XRP attorney John E. Deaton described this divide: “XRP is the most hated crypto by institutional traders but the most loved by retail investors.” This dynamic has consistently influenced XRP’s development and market behavior.
XRP Futures Success Faces Long-Term Skepticism
While XRP futures momentum demonstrates strong interest, some critics question whether it translates to long-term value. Compared to stablecoins, smart contracts, and oracle solutions, XRP’s original function as a bridge currency faces structural limitations. The XRP Ledger has also been noted for its limited adoption and functionality.
At the time of writing, XRP trades at $3.00, up over 3% in the last 24 hours. The futures milestone indicates substantial capital flow into the coin, potentially for speculation, hedging, or positioning ahead of regulatory decisions. Approval of a spot ETF would be a key test of retail confidence and could influence broader institutional adoption.
