- Circle is launching cirBTC, a fully backed Bitcoin token to unlock $1.7 trillion in idle BTC for DeFi and institutional markets.
- The token aims to offer secure, transparent, and auditable Bitcoin access across trading, lending, and borrowing platforms.
Circle is expanding beyond stablecoins with the upcoming launch of cirBTC, a 1:1 BTC-backed token designed for decentralized finance (DeFi) and institutional trading. The move aims to unlock billions of dollars in idle Bitcoin liquidity and make BTC more usable across crypto markets.
cirBTC Brings Idle Bitcoin into DeFi
Over $1.7 trillion worth of Bitcoin currently sits largely unused in DeFi due to trust and custody concerns. Circle’s cirBTC addresses this by offering a fully backed token, with reserves verifiable on-chain in real time.
Users will be able to deploy BTC across lending, borrowing, and trading platforms without exiting crypto markets. The token targets institutional users such as OTC desks, market makers, and lending protocols. It will provide a secure and transparent alternative to existing wrapped BTC products.
Competing in an Established Market
cirBTC enters a market currently led by BitGo’s WBTC and Coinbase’s cbBTC, which together hold a combined supply of approximately 208,000 BTC and a market cap of around $14 billion.
While these existing products dominate, they have faced criticism over custody risks and transparency issues. Circle aims to solve this problem using its regulated infrastructure and a reserve model similar to USDC, offering fully auditable issuance and redemption.
A Neutral and Compliant Solution
The new token is designed as a compliant and neutral option for institutions, leveraging Circle’s licensing framework across multiple jurisdictions. cirBTC also plans to support cross-chain movement and integrate with various financial applications, providing more flexibility than traditional BTC wrappers.
Although no official launch date has been announced, cirBTC promises to make Bitcoin more functional in DeFi and institutional trading, bridging a critical gap in the crypto ecosystem.
