Ethereum Could Be 100x Faster: Buterin Proposes Bold RISC-V Upgrade

  • Vitalik Buterin has proposed replacing Ethereum’s Virtual Machine with the open-source RISC-V instruction set to boost speed by up to 100 times and simplify the protocol.
  • While the shift may break backward compatibility and require retraining developers, experts see long-term potential in the upgrade.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, is pushing for a radical shift in the network’s architecture. In a recent blog post published on May 3, he proposed replacing Ethereum’s long-standing Virtual Machine (EVM) with the open-source RISC-V instruction set. According to Buterin, this change could make Ethereum up to 100 times faster and significantly simpler to maintain.

A Shift Towards Speed and Simplicity

At the heart of Buterin’s proposal is the desire to cut out unnecessary translation layers that currently slow down Ethereum’s operations. RISC-V would allow decentralized applications to run directly on the execution layer, eliminating the extra steps involved in using the EVM. This streamlining, Buterin claims, could lead to massive performance gains and lower costs.

In his blog post, Buterin also noted that Ethereum could become “as simple as Bitcoin” within five years if RISC-V is adopted. Simplifying the protocol could reduce infrastructure expenses and lower the risks associated with bugs or security vulnerabilities.

Backward Compatibility and Developer Concerns

While the potential speed gains are impressive, switching to RISC-V would come with major trade-offs. One of the most significant issues is the risk of breaking backward compatibility. Developers would need to restructure or rewrite thousands of smart contracts currently built on the EVM, creating a steep learning curve.

Retraining the existing developer community to use a completely different system could also slow down adoption in the short term. Still, Buterin argues that the long-term benefits outweigh these challenges.

Expert Reactions Remain Hopeful

Despite the complexity of the proposed transition, experts see value in Buterin’s vision. Thad Pinakiewicz of Galaxy Research believes Ethereum’s strength lies in its foundational technology rather than just its market price. He suggests that embracing fundamental improvements like RISC-V is essential for long-term growth.

If Ethereum developers and the broader community can navigate the hurdles of this major shift, the network may emerge faster, safer, and more efficient. Whether the bold RISC-V move becomes a reality remains to be seen—but the conversation around Ethereum’s future just got a lot more interesting.
