Ethereum Foundation Shuts Down Holešky Testnet After Completing Fusaka Upgrade

  • Developers are shifting testing operations to Hoodi and Sepolia, Ethereum’s new primary testnets.

The Ethereum Foundation has started winding down the Holešky test network after successfully completing the Fusaka upgrade. Holešky, launched in 2023, played a crucial role in testing large-scale validator operations and major Ethereum upgrades.

Holešky’s Role in Advancing Ethereum

The Holešky testnet was built to support extensive validator testing and simulate real-world network upgrades before their mainnet deployment. During its lifespan, it hosted several key trials, including Dencun, Pectra, and most recently, Fusaka.

The Fusaka upgrade introduced PeerDAS (Peer Data Availability Sampling), a feature designed to reduce bandwidth usage for validators. This improvement helps layer-2 (L2) networks operate more efficiently while enhancing Ethereum’s scalability. By allowing partial data verification, PeerDAS ensures faster data access and lighter network load, marking a major step in Ethereum’s technical evolution.

Ethereum Developers Move to Hoodi and Sepolia

After Fusaka’s completion, the Ethereum Foundation confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that Holešky will be shut down within two weeks. The network has now reached its planned end-of-life and will no longer receive client or infrastructure support.

To continue their testing, operators and developers are advised to migrate to Hoodi and Sepolia—the two active Ethereum testnets. Hoodi, launched in March 2025, offers a new validator environment optimized for large-scale performance testing. Sepolia, on the other hand, remains the main platform for staking and dApp (decentralized application) development.

Ethereum’s Next Phase of Testnet Innovation

The shutdown of Holešky marks another milestone in Ethereum’s continuous development cycle. Each testnet, though temporary, plays a vital part in improving security, scalability, and efficiency across the network.

By completing the Fusaka upgrade and transitioning to newer testnets, Ethereum reinforces its commitment to building a faster and more scalable blockchain ecosystem. As developers move testing operations to Hoodi and Sepolia, Ethereum’s path toward a more efficient and developer-friendly future becomes clearer.
