In a recent biweekly call, Ethereum developers revealed their ambitious plan to kick off the testing phase for Dencun on the Goerli test network (testnet) starting January 17. Tim Beiko, the protocol support lead at the Ethereum Foundation, emphasized the significance of the testing timeline during the call, stating,

He further revealed that the team aims to release a blog post detailing the fork around the week of January 8th, providing users with at least a week to update their systems.

Originally slated for the last quarter of 2023, the Dencun upgrade was rescheduled to 2024 due to the intricate engineering challenges associated with its implementation. The Ethereum developers are determined to ensure a seamless transition and have outlined a draft timeline for the testing upgrade, targeting the Sepolia testnet on January 31 and the Holesky testnet on February 7.

The actual deployment of changes on the mainnet is anticipated by the end of February, contingent on the outcomes of the testnet forks, with developers cautioning that dates might be subject to adjustments.

Dencun, representing the first major upgrade since the Shapella release earlier this year, which enabled staked ether (ETH) withdrawals from the blockchain, signifies Ethereum’s commitment to continuous innovation and improvement.
