IOTA Boosts Blockchain Performance with Starfish Upgrade

  • IOTA launched Starfish to keep the ledger moving even when validators lag.
  • It uses erasure coding and DACs to boost reliability and efficiency.

The IOTA Foundation has unveiled Starfish, a major consensus upgrade designed to improve network resilience and data reliability in real-world blockchain applications. Rolled out on the testnet on February 11, 2026, Starfish addresses longstanding challenges in distributed systems where network lags or temporary validator failures can slow progress.

Ensuring Ledger Progress Even When Validators Lag

Traditional consensus models require tight synchronization among validators, meaning that even minor delays can stall the entire network. Starfish changes this approach. With the new protocol, the ledger continues advancing while lagging validators catch up, preventing bottlenecks and ensuring smoother operations across distributed environments.

This is particularly important for real-world deployments where network conditions are unpredictable. Starfish’s introduction marks a shift toward greater operational robustness without compromising on security or efficiency.

Key Protocol Upgrades: Erasure Coding and DACs

At the core of Starfish is a partially synchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) protocol built on a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). The upgrade leverages Encoded Cordial Dissemination, a mechanism combining Reed–Solomon erasure coding with Data Availability Certificates (DACs).

Each validator now shares full transaction data for its own blocks and distributes encoded shards for others. Once enough shards are received, transaction data can be reconstructed even if some nodes temporarily fall behind. DACs tied to committed leader blocks allow validators to efficiently verify data availability, ensuring that the network maintains integrity without costly communication overhead.

Testnet Rollout and Real-World Applications

Starfish currently runs on the IOTA testnet, while the mainnet remains secured by Mysticeti. The testnet focuses on robustness under real-world connectivity challenges, making it ideal for environments like logistics and trade.

Earlier this month, IOTA-powered TWIN began live trials in UK border operations, digitizing paper-heavy trade processes through a partnership with Teesside University. These pilots showcase how Starfish’s enhancements could support scalable, reliable, and efficient distributed ledger deployments.

Looking Ahead: Stability and Integration

The IOTA Foundation continues to explore stablecoin integration, such as USDT, to strengthen liquidity for DeFi, trade finance, and tokenized settlements. Market response has been positive, with IOTA showing gains over the past 24 hours and trading volume increasing significantly, reflecting growing interest in the Starfish upgrade.

By prioritizing data availability, fault tolerance, and operational continuity, Starfish positions IOTA as a leading blockchain protocol ready for complex real-world applications.
