Pi Network Protocol 25 Upgrade June Deadline Puts Nodes on Alert

  • Pi Network faces a June 18, 2026 Protocol 25 upgrade deadline, with non-upgraded nodes risking mainnet exclusion.
  • The update adds smart contracts and improves scalability toward an open mainnet.

Pi Network is set to roll out its Protocol 25 upgrade, with a firm deadline of June 18, 2026. Node operators who do not update risk losing access to the mainnet, making this one of the network’s most important upgrades to date.

At the center of this transition is the broader goal of turning Pi Network into a fully open and programmable blockchain capable of supporting real applications, smart contracts, and external integrations.

A Major Step Toward the Open Mainnet

The Protocol 25 upgrade builds on the earlier completion of Protocol 24, which helped stabilize the network and prepare it for more advanced features. With Protocol 25, Pi Network moves closer to its long-promised open mainnet environment.

This shift is important because it signals a transition from a largely enclosed system into a blockchain that can interact more freely with external platforms. If successful, it would allow smoother token movement, broader application development, and improved network participation.

The upgrade also aligns Pi Network with Stellar Core V20 standards, improving compatibility with the wider Stellar ecosystem. This connection strengthens the network’s potential for interoperability, liquidity access, and future exchange integrations.

Soroban Smart Contracts Bring New Functionality

One of the biggest changes introduced by Protocol 25 is support for Soroban, Stellar’s smart contract platform. Before this upgrade, Pi Network functioned mainly as a transaction ledger with limited programmability.

With Soroban integration, developers can now build decentralized applications directly on the network. This opens the door for use cases such as decentralized finance platforms, NFT systems, and tokenized real-world assets.

In simple terms, Pi Network is shifting from a passive blockchain into a programmable ecosystem that can support more complex digital services.

Performance and Scalability Improvements

The upgrade also focuses on improving transaction speed and network efficiency. Earlier versions of the system struggled with scalability concerns, especially given the network’s large user base.

Protocol 25 introduces improvements in consensus processing and block finalization. These upgrades are designed to reduce delays and increase transaction throughput, helping the network handle higher activity levels more smoothly.

This matters because Pi Network reportedly has tens of millions of KYC-verified users. Without better scalability, real-world usage would remain limited even after the open mainnet launch.

June 18 Deadline Creates Pressure for Node Operators

The most urgent part of the upgrade is the mandatory deadline set for June 18, 2026. All node operators are required to update their software to Protocol 25 before this date.

The update process is relatively simple. Operators need to install the latest node version, verify the setup, and restart their systems. However, failure to complete the update has serious consequences.

Nodes that do not upgrade will become incompatible with the new consensus system. This means they will be excluded from validating transactions and will lose participation in the network.

In extreme cases, widespread non-compliance could lead to fragmentation risks, which is why the Pi Core Team has emphasized strict adherence to the timeline.

What This Means for Developers and the Ecosystem

For developers building on Pi Network, Protocol 25 opens a new phase of opportunity. Smart contract support means applications can now move beyond testing and into real deployment.

Early use cases are expected in areas such as payments, peer-to-peer lending, and supply chain verification. These applications could begin rolling out shortly after the upgrade stabilizes.

The upgrade also strengthens Pi Network’s position when it comes to potential exchange listings. A programmable and standards-aligned blockchain is generally easier for major exchanges to evaluate.

Users and Holders Face a Key Transition Period

For everyday users and token holders, the most important step is ensuring account readiness. Completing identity verification and wallet migration remains essential as the network moves toward a more regulated and structured environment.

After the upgrade, participation rewards and governance features are expected to favor verified users increasingly. This makes KYC completion a critical step for long-term engagement within the ecosystem.

Outlook After the Protocol 25 Upgrade

The success of Protocol 25 will depend on how smoothly nodes adopt the update and how quickly developers begin building on the new infrastructure.

If adoption is strong, Pi Network could enter a new phase of activity driven by smart contracts and external integrations. If adoption is slow, however, the transition to an open mainnet could be delayed.

Either way, the June 18 deadline marks a turning point. It is not just a technical update but a test of whether Pi Network can evolve into a fully functional and competitive blockchain network.
