Pi Network Suspends Wallet Feature After Millions in PI Lost to Scams

The Pi Network team has temporarily suspended its wallet payment request function following a wave of sophisticated scams that drained millions of PI tokens from user accounts. Announced on social platform X, the move aims to protect users from attackers exploiting the feature to trick holders into authorizing fraudulent transfers.

On-chain data indicates that scammers have siphoned over 4.4 million PI through deceptive requests, with one single scammer address reportedly receiving hundreds of thousands of tokens monthly throughout 2025. Once approved, these transfers cannot be reversed, leaving victims with no recourse and sparking calls for stronger in-app protections and clearer warnings.

Public Addresses and Social Engineering Risks

While the Pi protocol itself remains secure, the blockchain’s transparency allows anyone to view wallet balances and public addresses. Fraudsters have leveraged this visibility to impersonate friends, moderators, or unofficial contacts, pressuring users into approving token transfers.

To prevent further losses, the network disabled the payment request feature across its ecosystem. Although this suspension is temporary, no exact timeline for reinstatement has been provided. In the meantime, community moderators urge users to reject unsolicited requests and verify any unexpected token movements within the app.

Rising Scam Tactics Threaten Users

Scammers targeting the Pi community employ various tactics, from phishing links claiming fake airdrops to counterfeit portals requesting wallet credentials or private keys. Many of these schemes mimic official interfaces, making it difficult for inexperienced users to distinguish legitimate sources from fraudulent ones.

Pi Network’s core team advises users not to share sensitive information or engage with unverified links. While the project is not classified as a scam, its mobile-centric, referral-based model and rapid growth have made it a frequent target for social engineering attacks.

Market Impact and Outlook

The feature suspension coincides with mixed sentiment surrounding the PI token, which currently trades near $0.20, up just 1% over the past two weeks. Low liquidity, recent token unlocks, and moderate daily trading volumes have limited the token’s price movement.

Experts view the temporary suspension as a necessary step to protect holders and maintain confidence in the long term. Meanwhile, community leaders stress the importance of education, cautious behavior, and heightened vigilance as the Pi Network continues to develop improved security measures.

The Pi Network wallet incident highlights a key lesson for the crypto ecosystem: open, transparent blockchains offer benefits but also expose users to social engineering risks. Robust safeguards, clear warnings, and user education remain essential for sustainable growth and long-term security.
