Ripple Scheduled to Unlock 1 Billion XRP Tomorrow

  • Ripple is set to unlock 1 billion XRP, though most tokens are expected to be relocked, limiting supply impact.
  • XRP remains under pressure, trading below key averages amid cautious market sentiment.

Ripple is set to unlock around 1 billion XRP from escrow tomorrow, marking the first scheduled release of 2026. While the figure appears large, the event follows a long-established supply mechanism that the company has used for years. As with previous releases, the move is expected to draw attention from traders and long-term holders, even though its direct effect on the market is often limited.

The escrow system, introduced in 2017, was designed to bring predictability and transparency to XRP’s supply. Each month, up to 1 billion XRP is released from time-locked contracts. However, Ripple rarely allows the full amount to enter circulation. Instead, a significant portion is typically returned to escrow under new locks, reducing immediate supply pressure.

How Ripple’s Escrow System Works

Historically, Ripple has relocked between 60% and 80% of every monthly release. This means that roughly 600 million to 800 million XRP is placed back into escrow shortly after being unlocked. As a result, only about 200 million to 400 million XRP usually remains available for operational use, ecosystem development, or liquidity support.

Because of this pattern, the “1 billion XRP unlocked” headline often overstates the actual impact on circulating supply. Past escrow releases have shown that XRP’s price response is generally muted, as markets already anticipate these events well in advance.

Short-Term Sentiment and Market Conditions

Despite being routine, the first unlock of the year can still influence short-term sentiment. This is especially true during periods of lower liquidity or broader uncertainty across the cryptocurrency market. Currently, XRP has been facing pressure alongside the wider market, with investor confidence remaining cautious.

At the time of writing, XRP is trading near $1.87. The token has posted a modest 0.4% gain over the past 24 hours and is up nearly 1% over the last seven days. While these gains offer slight relief, the broader technical picture remains challenging.

Technical Indicators Point to Ongoing Weakness

XRP continues to trade below its 50-day simple moving average of $2.07 and its 200-day SMA of $2.49. Remaining under both short- and long-term averages suggests sustained downward pressure, as the price has yet to reclaim these key resistance levels.

The 14-day relative strength index currently stands at 42.74. This places XRP in neutral territory but below the midpoint, indicating underlying weakness rather than any clear recovery signal.

Overall, while the upcoming XRP unlock may briefly affect sentiment, historical patterns suggest its direct market impact is likely to remain limited unless broader conditions shift.
